Early, easy access to books is an essential component of academic success and brain development. Students use our classroom library to listen to read-alouds, read independently, share a book with a friend, and discuss literature with their reading groups. There is a lot to love about our classroom library, but it's far from perfect. We are a bilingual class, in a dual language school, where students learn and communicate in Spanish. However, over half of our books are written in English. This project will put a a ton of new, fun stories written in Spanish into the hands of these great kiddos. We are excited about familiar titles and new favorites alike. These new books will allow for greater choice in what to read, strengthen emerging literacy skills, and keep my students connected with their first language. Personal choice is a huge motivator with young readers, and a wide variety of titles cater to more interests and reading levels. A newly bolstered classroom library will do wonders to enhance our print-rich classroom.
