As the school counselor, I work with students in small groups who need additional support—and these materials have truly transformed our time together.\r\nDuring our small group sessions, students are actively decoding secret alien messages, working together to break patterns and solve coded clues. Instead of simply practicing reading skills on paper, they are collaborating, discussing strategies, and encouraging one another as they work through challenges. I hear statements like, \"Let's try it this way,\" and \"We can figure this out together!\"—which shows growth not just in decoding skills, but in teamwork and confidence.\r\nStudents are using their journals to document their \"alien investigations.\" They eagerly write observations, explain their thinking, and create imaginative stories about how they solved each mission. For some of my reluctant writers, this has been a breakthrough. Because the activities feel like a mission rather than an assignment, they are more willing to write, reflect, and communicate their ideas.\r\nWhen it's time for math, the room comes alive with hands-on problem-solving. Students use tactile manipulatives to model math scenarios, practice number combinations, and \"teach\" their alien friends how to solve problems. As they roll, sort, build, and count, they are strengthening number sense while also practicing patience, turn-taking, and flexible thinking. If something doesn't work the first time, they regroup and try again—building resilience along with math fluency.\r\nWhat I love most is watching students who sometimes struggle in traditional classroom settings light up during these sessions. They are problem-solving, collaborating, thinking critically, and supporting one another in a safe small-group environment. This project blends decoding, math, writing, STEM thinking, and social-emotional learning into one rich, engaging experience.\r\nYour support has given my students more than supplies—it has given them confidence, creativity, and a new excitement for learning. Thank you for believing in them and helping us create learning experiences that are truly \"out of this world.\"","fullyFundedDate":1764736174930,"projectUrl":"project/alien-code-mission/9900858/","projectTitle":"“Alien Code Mission”","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Byrd","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9971564"},{"teacherId":9971564,"projectId":9266608,"letterContent":"I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your generous donation that allowed us to launch our After-School Public Speaking Club. Your support has sparked a movement of student confidence, voice, and leadership. These tools have completely transformed the way our students engage with each other and with their growing sense of self-expression.\r\n\r\n For many of our students, this was their very first time speaking in front of an audience. I still remember the moment one of our quietest 4th graders delivered a full one-minute speech about kindness. Afterward, she said, \"I felt like I was really heard.\" The books you helped us purchase have become the foundation of our weekly lessons. \r\nI've watched students begin to carry themselves differently in class, ask more questions, and participate in leadership opportunities with newfound courage. One 5th grader told me, \"Before this club, I would get nervous just raising my hand. Now I want to lead the announcements at school.\" That growth, that confidence—it's all thanks to your belief in what we're building here.","fullyFundedDate":1747661757540,"projectUrl":"project/voices-of-the-future-public-speaking-cl/9266608/","projectTitle":"Voices of the Future: Public Speaking Club","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Byrd","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9971564"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_18337","usesǿմý":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":405,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":89,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":58.6,"schoolId":18337,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Martin L King, Junior Elementary School on @ǿմý:","schoolName":"Martin L King, Junior Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/alabama/tuscaloosa-city-school-district/martin-l-king-junior-elementary-school/18337"}
