Reading has started to feel like something they own, not something they're told to do.\r\n\r\nSome students in particular have really connected with the new books.\r\nA few reluctant readers who used to struggle to finish a chapter are now asking if they can take their books outside at recess or read a few extra minutes after lunch.\r\n\r\nYour support didn't just add books to our shelves, it helped spark genuine enthusiasm for reading. They had a blast as they talked with one another about their designs and asked each other for advice. They were surprised to be talking home a comfy grey sweater that they could use for those chilly evenings and early mornings. \r\n\r\nAll fourth grade classes in the dual language immersion program at Canalino Elementary school was able to participate in this project! A group of kids finished out the year with two of the books during the small group time, and the newest wave of Second Graders started reading one as their first book of the year this month! Many of the students that come through the small group are not native speakers, and it has been helpful for them to see familiar book characters in Spanish texts. Our native speakers in the group are excited that they get to read the stories about characters that many times they have only seen provided in English. \r\nThis project has gotten the group very excited to read and discuss chapter books in the Spanish language. The kids loved to pretend and run the flower stand. They worked cooperatively to run the shop and shared the gardening tools to tend to their plants. The play sets helped foster great creativity by allowing them to build their own flowers and bouquets! \r\nBy adding in the large items, like the potting benches and wagon, the kids were more inspired by the theme, and it really transformed our \"kitchen\" space into a garden! I love that this center can be enjoyed by future classes year after year. Students are more engaged and motivated because they see themselves as historians uncovering stories from the past.
