Their faces lit up, and they couldn't wait to jump in and try the games. Because of our generous donors from the Donors-Choose Community, including a donor from California & The Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, these tools are now a joyful part of our daily reading routine. Also, my students use these same games to help them read simple books with CVC words and some are beginning to write their own words. We are truly thankful for the support that gave our donors a peek into our classroom as your kindness is helping our students take important steps toward becoming confident beginning readers and writers.\r\n\r\nWe are so thankful to now be using hands-on games that make literacy fun and stress-free for our young learners in our small reading intervention groups. With tools like the \"Didax CVC Spelling Board Game,\" letter tiles, and word cards, students build short words, read them out loud, and then happily read them again as they play. One especially meaningful moment was when a student who usually feels unsure sounded out \"cat,\" paused, and proudly said, \"I can read it again!\" Moments like that remind us how grateful we are for these resources that all of you donors provided by giving to this project. As a Reading Intervention Teacher, it is my job to not only find and use developmentally appropriate books for my youngest students to learn to read with, but it is my job and my personal commitment to my students for me to provide a wide range of culturally diverse reading material. Thanks to both of the generous donors to this project, Ms. Maria & Panda Express, I am able to do just that!\r\n\r\nWith this project, I will have Lunar New Year themed board books for my Transitional Kindergarten students that come to my intervention room for support, and I will also have a variety of picture books at different reading levels for my Kinder through 3rd grade intervention students as well. So many classrooms have such limited access to culturally rich literature, especially for the younger students, so I am totally thrilled to be able to teach children about other cultures and traditions, all while teaching what I love and what they need-reading!\r\n\r\nThanks to Maria Montalvo & Panda Express, my small group reading sessions will be able to use books like, \"Celebra El Ano Nuevo Chino Con La Familia Fong,\" a bilingual Spanish and English book for my emerging bilingual students and striving readers who primarily speak and/or read only or mostly in Spanish. This is a great way to teach literacy in English, while exposing students to a totally different culture. This will serve as a great opportunity for vocabulary building, understanding of cognates, High Frequency words, and listening comprehension. My daily small group reading sessions will be so impactful with this book and all of the other wonderful books highlighting Lunar New Year that are provided by this project. At the end of this next quarter, I will reward students for improvement in literacy skills by providing them with a celebratory Happy Lunar New Year red envelope of chocolate coins. The students will absolutely love this and it will be double-fold in impact, exposure, and achievement. Did you know that there are many parallels between literacy and coding? Well there are certainly are such as, they both help to develop critical thinking and other skills. In fact, it's super perfect for project-based learning approach, which is why I am using the materials from this project build that bridge between literacy and coding in my after-school Minecraft Club.\r\n\r\nSome of older students have partnered with a few of the younger children in our after school program to read with them. I thought the books from this project were the perfect way to garner student interest. When the students saw different leveled books about Minecraft, gaming, coding, etc., they flipped! These are the types of books that they often see as reading material in their classrooms, in our school library, nor at home. \r\n\r\nEach pair shares a book that they picked to read together with the elder peer taking the lead to help the younger reader and discuss their understanding using the student friendly guided questions I have provided. After everyone has finished reading their books, I will have all pairs meet together as one large group to share about their book and what they learned. The students are truly engaged, and I love that for them. When I pull out the devices for gaming time, I know that will be icing on the cake.
