Because of you, financial literacy is no longer an abstract concept in our classroom — it is something students can see, touch, practice, and understand. We are using the new materials during hands-on math centers where students role-play as shopkeepers and customers, count and exchange money, make change, and even track simple budgets. One of my favorite moments was watching a student carefully count out coins to \"buy\" a classroom item and then proudly announce, \"I have enough, and I even have savings left!\" That spark of confidence is exactly what this project was meant to inspire.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the excitement was immediate. Students were eager to explore the play money, organize the wallets and registers, and set up our classroom \"store.\" There were wide eyes and lots of questions: \"Can we really use this?\" \"Are we going to learn how to save?\" For many students, this is their first opportunity to handle money in a structured learning environment. The tactile experience made math feel real and purposeful instead of just numbers on a page.\r\n\r\nNext, we are beginning a mini-unit on needs versus wants and creating personal savings goals. Students will track their earnings from classroom responsibilities and decide how to \"spend\" or \"save\" during our simulation days. We will also integrate reading and writing by having students design advertisements and explain their financial choices. Your generosity has allowed us to build foundational life skills in a way that is joyful, practical, and empowering. Thank you for helping our little hearts grow into financially confident learners.","fullyFundedDate":1766126333793,"projectUrl":"project/money-smarts-for-little-hearts/9654074/","projectTitle":"Money Smarts for Little Hearts","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rivas von Bargen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9619842_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753817719122","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9619842"},{"teacherId":9619842,"projectId":9654073,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our classroom has changed in a quiet but powerful way. The new bookcases are now the heart of our room — not just furniture against a wall, but a visible declaration that books matter and that our students' ideas deserve space. We organized the shelves by theme and reading level, then invited students to help curate sections with handwritten recommendation cards. Within days, the shelves were no longer \"mine\" — they were theirs. During a recent research project, I watched a student who typically hesitates to participate walk directly to a shelf, select a biography, and return to the group saying, \"I found someone like me.\" That moment alone justified every effort behind this project.\r\n\r\nWhen the bookcases first arrived, the reaction was immediate and heartfelt. There were gasps, followed by a spontaneous rush to help unpack and arrange. Several students ran their hands across the empty shelves and asked, \"Are these all for us?\" It was the first time many of them had seen books displayed intentionally and beautifully rather than stacked in bins. The simple act of elevating the books — giving them a proper home — signaled that reading is not an afterthought here. It is central to who we are becoming as learners.\r\n\r\nNext, we are beginning a student-led inquiry unit where small groups will choose a topic, build a mini \"expert shelf\" from our collection, and present their findings to the class. The bookcases make this possible; they allow students to browse, compare sources, and think critically about how information is organized. Your support has created structure, ownership, and pride in our classroom environment. More than storage, you gave us a foundation for curiosity — and that will continue to grow every time a student reaches for a book and discovers something new.","fullyFundedDate":1762266431831,"projectUrl":"project/basic-bookcases-for-brilliant-minds/9654073/","projectTitle":"Basic Bookcases for Brilliant Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rivas von Bargen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9619842_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753817719122","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9619842"},{"teacherId":9619842,"projectId":9512313,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom. Because of you, my second graders now have play money and basic classroom supplies that are already making a meaningful difference in our daily learning.\r\n\r\nWe are using the play money during our math lessons to practice counting, place value, and making change. One of our favorite moments so far was creating a \"classroom store.\" Students worked together to price items, count out the correct amount of money, and check each other's work. Even students who usually struggle with math felt confident and excited to participate. The basic classroom supplies have also helped ensure that every student has what they need to fully engage in lessons without worry.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were thrilled. Their faces lit up as they explored the play money and asked when we could start using it. Several students immediately said it made math feel fun and real, which was wonderful to hear.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue building on these lessons by using the play money for word problems, budgeting activities, and small group projects that focus on real-life math skills. These activities help students strengthen their understanding while building confidence, teamwork, and independence.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the opportunity to learn in a hands-on and engaging way. The new microwave, mini fridge, and snack supplies have already made a huge difference in our day. Before, many of my students brought food that they couldn't heat or keep cold, which meant lunches were often rushed, uncomfortable, or eaten half-cold. Now, students can warm their meals, safely store yogurt or fruit, and even grab a quick snack if they didn't have breakfast that morning.\r\n\r\nOne moment that really stood out was our very first lunchtime with the new setup. A few students were literally cheering (one yelled, \"We're a real classroom now!\") as they took turns warming their food. Several students told me it felt \"like home\" to have warm lunches together. The room was full of smiles, quiet conversation, and that calm sense of being cared for — which is exactly what I hoped for.\r\n\r\nNext, our class is working on building healthy routines around taking care of our space and one another. Students have assigned roles to keep the fridge organized, wipe down the microwave, and make sure snacks are shared fairly and respectfully. This responsibility is helping them grow their independence and confidence — and the warmth and comfort of a good meal supports their learning more than I can ever fully express.","fullyFundedDate":1756075029551,"projectUrl":"project/help-me-minimize-disruptions-and-foster/9513041/","projectTitle":"Help Me Minimize Disruptions and Foster Independence","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rivas von Bargen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9619842_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753817719122","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9619842"},{"teacherId":9619842,"projectId":9512119,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our classroom! The scooters will give kids a chance to move, relieve stress, and re-focus—especially important for those who don't have safe spaces to play outside of school. A new rug will provide a warm, central gathering place for read-alouds, discussions, and group activities, building both comfort and community. And the new books will diversify our classroom library, giving students access to engaging, culturally relevant stories—often their only opportunity to read outside of school.\r\n\r\nTogether, these resources will make learning more accessible, joyful, and inclusive for every child in my classroom.
