This is my first year in 5th grade; therefore, I did not have a class library going into the school year. Receiving these novels facilitated my desire to teach literacy skills using authentic texts students would actually enjoy. The novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio has been a powerful addition to our library. The novel has inspired thoughtful discussions and valuable life lessons among my students. I believe the lessons we have discussed will be carried with them as they transition to middle school in a couple of months. \r\n\r\nThrough reading Wonder, students have developed critical reading comprehension skills, such as identifying themes, making inferences, and understanding character development. More importantly, the story has helped our class explore empathy, kindness, and the importance of embracing differences. All students have enjoyed reading the novel as our after lunch time transition. So much so that if we do not read it one day they are constantly reminding me to squish into our day!
