As we read, students practice identifying theme, analyzing character development, and understanding how perseverance and integrity shape a story. We also focus on vocabulary development, context clues, and citing textual evidence to support their thinking. Additionally, I use vocabulary from the book to create weekly spelling lists, helping students build word recognition and apply new terms in both reading and writing.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is highly structured but also engaging and collaborative. We read together as a class, pause to discuss key moments, and ask questions that encourage critical thinking. After each chapter, students complete comprehension quizzes to reinforce understanding, and I'm proud to share that several students have earned perfect scores. These moments build confidence and show students that their effort is paying off. In addition, students participate in discussions, partner work, and written reflections to process what they've read.\r\n\r\nTo make the experience even more meaningful, I collaborated with our art teacher so students could create pottery inspired by Tree-ear, the main character. This hands-on connection allowed students to step into the world of the novel and better appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication described in the story.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have truly connected with the book, especially those who relate to Tree-ear's determination and resilience. I've seen students who don't always speak up become more engaged during discussions, eager to share their thoughts about the characters and events. \r\n\r\nOthers have taken pride in their quiz performance, striving for and achieving high scores. It's been incredibly rewarding to watch students not only enjoy the story, but also grow as readers and thinkers through this experience.","fullyFundedDate":1770967933842,"projectUrl":"project/a-powerful-novel-for-sixth-graders/10093317/","projectTitle":"A Powerful Novel for Sixth Graders","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Farmer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10432632_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1770827804658","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10432632"},{"teacherId":10343433,"projectId":9879977,"letterContent":"My students and I are incredibly grateful for your generosity. This ensures that every student receives the support and challenge they need to succeed, while also keeping instruction organized and accessible for all learners.\r\n\r\nBecause of this support, students have been able to participate in a wide variety of engaging, hands-on projects that bring learning to life. These projects would not be possible without dependable access to printed resources that guide students through each step of the learning process.\r\n\r\nThe P.E. equipment has also greatly enriched my students' school experience. Before these donations, our options were limited, and many lessons felt repetitive or restricted by the lack of resources. Now, with a variety of new equipment, my students are not only more engaged, but they also have the opportunity to explore other activities that spark their interest.\r\n\r\nOne of the most noticeable changes is the range of skills my students can now develop. With volleyballs, nets, and appropriate boundaries, for example, my students have been able to learn the basics of volleyball—something that was previously impossible. They are enthusiastic about practicing serves, volleys, and even learning how to spike a volleyball. This has brought a new sense of excitement to our lessons, as students eagerly look forward to taking turns, cheering each other on, and challenging themselves to improve each week. The donated materials have made it possible for them to participate in team sports, fostering not just physical skills but also teamwork and communication.\r\n\r\nIn addition to volleyball, the new equipment has allowed us to focus on critical skills such as hand-eye coordination. With items like beanbags, tennis balls, and cones, I am able to set up stations where students can practice catching, throwing, or dribbling. These activities are not only fun, but they also build fundamental motor skills that students will use in many sports and daily activities. I have noticed that students who once struggled with coordination are now making steady progress, gaining confidence in their abilities with each session. This individualized growth is only possible because we now have enough materials for everyone to participate at once, minimizing downtime and maximizing active learning.\r\n\r\nOverall, the donated physical education materials have had a profound and lasting impact on my 4th grade classroom. They have expanded the activities we can offer, allowed for the development of important physical and social skills, and created a more engaging and structured PE time. Most importantly, my students are more active, confident, and excited about physical education than ever before—a change that will benefit them both inside and outside the classroom for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1743655470808,"projectUrl":"project/lords-of-the-yard/9002679/","projectTitle":"Lords of the Yard","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. D.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3109167_orig.jpg?crop=913,913,x271,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752184219615","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3109167"},{"teacherId":7081832,"projectId":9578146,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our classroom has been filled with excitement and new opportunities to learn!\r\n\r\nWhen the students first opened the boxes of magnetic tiles and blocks, their eyes lit up.
