This kind of learning not only helps to establish the concepts we cover in class, but also to engage a different part of their brain, and to teach them the science and engineering practices that I hope they carry with them no matter what they do after high school. We studied the effects of carbon dioxide on global temperatures, we created a water-dropper system that could create static electricity to simulate lightning, we observed attractive and repulsive forces using pieces of plastic, and we showed how a salt solution could conduct an electrical current. To celebrate the end of the semester, we made ice cream using different chemical properties of milk and ice.\r\n\r\nI could not have achieved all this without your support. Next semester, we'll be embarking on learning about the periodic table and what makes different elements unique and useful in different situations. We'll also be looking at another global phenomenon (ocean acidification) and seeing how these chemical reactions impact the world around us. This won't be the last you hear from me, and I hope you'll continue to support the next Tales from the Laboratory when it comes out. \r\n\r\nThank you all once again, and I hope you have Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! For example, in our \"Budgeting for Biotechnology: Financial Literacy Through Gel Electrophoresis\" project, students learned how to budget both time and money while completing experiments. In our advanced forensics unit, they used the MiniOne gel electrophoresis system to solve a mock crime by matching DNA samples—combining scientific analysis with real-world problem-solving. It was incredible to watch them collaborate, think critically, and see abstract concepts click into place while managing real-world constraints.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were thrilled! You could feel the energy in the room as they eagerly explored the new tools, asking questions, sharing ideas, and immediately thinking of ways to apply them. Their enthusiasm made it clear that these resources were not just useful—they were inspiring.\r\n\r\nNext, our students are diving deeper into using the system to explore genetic genealogy, building on the skills and knowledge they've gained. The books you helped fund have made a noticeable difference in how students experience reading in our classrooms, and more than 500 students.\r\n\r\nEvery day, we begin class with independent reading—no screens, no devices, just books. That quiet routine has become a way for students to settle in, regulate, and focus before we transition into academic content. It's been especially helpful for students who struggle with attention or stress at the start of the class.\r\n\r\nSome of the students who've engaged most deeply with these books are our English learners. Even Newcomers—students still building basic English skills—have taken on the challenge of reading these books without using translation tools. Watching them stick with stories, ask about words they don't know, and keep reading has been powerful. A few students have even asked to borrow books to take home—something that hasn't happened often.\r\n\r\nThese books support more than just reading skills—they help students build confidence. Students practice fluency, comprehension, and stamina, often without realizing it, because they're genuinely interested in what they're reading.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. We have used the standing drawer organizer daily - from construction paper and glue, to colored pencils and headphones, the drawers hold everything we need for class to run smoothly. It has been a blessing to be able to provide my students with supplies in an organized manner that reduces the stress for all of us. \r\n\r\nAll of my students were surprised and excited to see our materials - especially the snacks! Teenagers are forever hungry, and being able to provide them with healthy snacks helps keep their energy up and their brains focused on learning. They were also excited about having a designated place to put supplies instead of just throwing them all into boxes like we were before. I think having an organized classroom helps to lower their stress levels and keeps them from worrying about having to bring things from home. \r\n\r\nWe are finishing up the year with a few projects. First, the students had to pick a Spanish speaking country, then look for a recipe from that country. They then had to create a menu for a restaurant and make a display that included information about their country and the menu. Finally, they had to prepare the dish they picked and share it with the class. It was a huge success! They had all the materials in the classroom, organized and easy to find, so they could complete their display. \r\n\r\nTheir next project is to make a book with verb conjugations. They have been using the construction paper and colored pencils to complete this. Finally, they read a chapter book in Spanish and had to create hexagons that connected to one another to show the important parts of the story.\r\n\r\nThanks to your generous donation, all of these projects have been possible this year.
