I thought students would develop responsibility and compassion for our pet. However, the students have exceeded this expectation.\r\nStudents jump at the chance to care for our rabbit, Charlie. They come in before school and volunteer to \"clean up his little gifts\". Many of our students have never had a pet or held an animal. This is their pet. Above that, the students have come to understand the importance of patience and trust. It took many weeks and a lot of patience for Charlie to trust us. Rabbits can be skittish and scare easily, as they are prey animals. We were patient and gentle, and we have developed bonds of trust. Charlie runs to greet students, and will jump in their laps. The students love to read aloud to Charlie, and he will stretch out in the open and listen with one ear towards them, completely relaxed.\r\nWe have talked about how important it is to trust others, and to have them trust you- much like what we have seen with Charlie. Trust takes time to build, and is based on honesty and integrity. You have to maintain someone's (or an animal's) trust, and if you do something to damage trust, it is really hard to rebuild. \r\nBeyond our classroom, Charlie has had a positive impact on adults who come to snuggle. He has a very calming affect. We have many students with emotional dysregulation, and teachers have asked that those students can come visit Charlie. We had a kindergarten student who was on the run. I saw him running past our room and asked him if he wanted to come see our rabbit. At first, he wasn't sure, but came back. He would not tell me his name, but I asked if he would tell Charlie, which he did. Charlie was \"glad to meet him\" and said \"he should take his teacher's hand and let her help him solve his problem.\" He did, because Charlie said he should. \r\nCharlie is having such a positive impact on our whole school! Thanks to your support, we received an incubator, a quail egg disc, a candler, and a brooder—each playing a crucial role in this unforgettable hands-on learning experience. From the very beginning of the school year, my students were buzzing with excitement about this project. They asked questions, made predictions, and eagerly counted down the days until hatch day. Students and staff watched in awe as the tiny quail emerged from their eggshell.\r\n\r\nThis project doesn't end at hatching, though. Our next steps include making meaningful, ongoing observations about the quails' growth and development. Students will track physical changes, behaviors, and milestones as the quail mature, giving them a deeper understanding of life cycles and animal care. Even after the quail leave our classroom, we will continue to receive weekly photo updates, keeping the learning and connection alive. This has truly been a transformative experience for my students, and none of it would have been possible without your kindness and generosity. These taxpayer dollars went to good use. We are a classical school in Grand Junction, Colorado. We are in our second year, with the first year being a year of splitting school sites and having students use port-a-potties. Now our new building is open, and we have already outgrown it, as traditional public school families are fleeing their current schools. We are needing to fill our supply closets and currently are looking at adding four or five classrooms in the form of modular trailers next year.
