The new books have transformed our reading time, opening up exciting opportunities to teach essential skills like identifying theme, analyzing character development, and making text-to-self connections. Titles like Front Desk and The Wild Robot have sparked deep conversations about empathy, resilience, and belonging—topics that resonate powerfully with our students. These texts help students move beyond just decoding words to truly engaging with stories on a personal and critical level.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is a vibrant, shared experience. During independent reading, students curl up in cozy nooks, journals in hand, eagerly annotating or sketching scenes from their books. In small groups, we discuss author's craft, infer characters' motivations, and compare books across genres. A few students have especially thrived with these additions—Amira, for instance, devoured Ghost in two days and now leads a lunch book club where she and her classmates discuss each chapter. Meanwhile, Mateo, who was previously reluctant to read, found a connection with the main character in Because of Mr. Terupt and is now volunteering to read aloud during class. These books haven't just filled our shelves—they've helped us build a true community of readers.
