Meeker Elementary School is in the third year of a five year Early Literacy Grant funded by the state of Colorado. Each year we have added more and more prescribed activities geared toward improving all students' fluency so they have more mental resources to focus on comprehending what they read. In third grade, there is a rather large cognitive shift, moving from \"learning to read\" in grades K-2, to \"reading to learn\" in grades 3-5. It is imperative that all students get the support and practice they need in order to be reading at grade level by the end of third grade. The supplies I was able to purchase through your generosity have helped me organize the Word Work, Vocabulary, Comprehension and Writing centers that students rotate through 2-3 times per week. \r\n\r\nHere is a recap of the supplies I ordered and how I am using them. The original stools I ordered were not available, which turned out to be a blessing. Instead I ordered a set of six, colorful, stacking, plastic stools to use at my horeshoe table when meeting with small groups while the other children are working in small groups at different centers. The stools look nothing like the other seating options in the classroom so it is easy to make sure they stay at the table. That way, I always have enough seating for the students I am meeting with and we do not lose precious time hunting for seats. The stools I obtained were less expensive which then gave me money to spend on colored and white cardstock, plastic sheet protectors and laminating sheets. The school generally supplies these materials, but with all teachers using them, they are often out, forcing us to make due with less user friendly supplies. The cardstock has been used to make vocabulary spinner activities, vocabulary card sets, weekly spelling pattern card sets, spelling word sorts, and high frequency, spelling word, and learned word activities for the vocabulary and word work centers. I have laminated many of the center activities in the sheets which are much heavier than the lamination materials provided by the school, so they last longer and are easier to use with dry erase markers. One of our fluency activities is 6-Minute Fluency which requires each student to have a binder with approximately 30 leveled passages with which partners time each other in repeated readings of the passages. By putting all the passages in plastic sheet protectors, I will be able to use the binders for years to come. The sheet protectors have also allowed me to customize different colored folders for each reading group so they know which supplies are for which group at a glance. \r\n\r\nI also ordered clipboards, large book bins, and a 60-Minute Visual CountdownTimer. The clipboards are available at each center for students to use if they choose not to sit at the center table or at their desks. The book bins now give all students their own book bin for their free choice books which they read whenever they have completed other center work. The bins keep them from having to hunt for books in their desks or cubbies, which means more time spent in books and more miles on the tongue. The timer has been great! I use it throughout the day for timing small and large group activities and for timing center rotations. It is helpful because students can look at it and immediately tell how much time they have left to complete a center.\r\n\r\nTrying to plan three centers for four different leveled reading groups each day is a big task. Having the materials readily available to use in prepping and preserving the activities so I can use them again in future years has been a godsend! The students have really enjoyed having enough seating in the classroom to not have to move chairs/stools from place to place and having fun colored clipboards available so they can find a quiet corner to work in. It is my goal to continue making materials that focus on the skills and strategies practiced in the upcoming units in our Wonders reading program and to keep adding new activities for each type of center in order to keep my students engaged and excited about practicing the skills that will make them better readers. It would have taken much longer to prepare and organize the centers my students use every day without her generosity. I had tried cheap dollar store stools with my school budget and they would break by the end of the year. Those cheaper stools also would allow the students to lean them back in them and would cause injury to the students. These new stools are very sturdy and are made so that the students find it incredibly difficult to lean them back. The students have been really thrilled with them. \r\n\r\nI originally had several other things in my order, but Donors Choose made me buy through another program so I was only able to get the three stools instead of headphones and cushions.","fullyFundedDate":1727462937201,"projectUrl":"project/comfortable-seating-for-all-students-for/8578203/","projectTitle":"Comfortable Seating for all Students for a Maximum Learning Environment","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Richardson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9304753_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1697050188060","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9304753"},{"teacherId":9223839,"projectId":8574628,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation to my Donors Choose project, \"Building Foundational Skills for Kindergarten Success.\" I am so excited to bring these enriching materials to my kindergarten students because of your support.
