The addition of an iPad and external hard drive has transformed the way my students plan, record, and edit their podcasts.\r\n\r\nMany of our donors use technology every day, but in our classroom, these tools are helping students create with technology, not just consume it. The iPad allows students to record high-quality audio, conduct interviews, and edit episodes directly from one device. The external hard drive gives us a secure space to store large audio files and preserve every student's work without worrying about losing progress or running out of storage.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most is the independence this new technology provides. They love being able to record on the go, collaborate in real time, and instantly hear their progress. It's empowering for them to take ownership of their projects and produce something that sounds truly professional.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who was previously hesitant to speak up in class, has really connected with the iPad recording process. Having the ability to record, listen back, and re-record in a comfortable setting has helped them build confidence in their voice, both literally and figuratively. Others have discovered a passion for sound editing and storytelling that they didn't know they had before.\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide equipment; it gave my students the tools to share their voices, stories, and creativity with the world. These texts introduce important skills like empathy, perspective-taking, and emotional intelligence, as they explore identity, culture, and the complexities of personal challenges. In Mexican Whiteboy, students learn about cultural identity and the internal conflict of belonging to multiple communities, which helps them reflect on their own identities. Tears of a Tiger provides an opportunity to discuss grief, responsibility, and the emotional impact of loss, which is key in helping students navigate their own feelings.\r\n\r\nBoth books also foster critical thinking by encouraging students to analyze characters' motivations, actions, and the consequences of their decisions. These texts support skills in close reading, comprehension, and text-to-self connections, all while nurturing their ability to articulate and support their opinions.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading is an active, engaging process. We approach each text by first discussing the themes, characters, and questions they might have before diving into the book. I encourage students to annotate their books, highlighting key passages and making notes on questions, emotions, or ideas that come to mind. We often engage in group discussions, where students share their insights and interpretations of the text, allowing for diverse perspectives. This collaborative environment not only strengthens their comprehension skills but also helps them appreciate the different ways people connect with literature.\r\n\r\nWe also integrate multimedia and activities that connect the themes of the books to real-world issues. For example, after reading Tears of a Tiger, we had discussions on mental health and how grief impacts different people, and with Mexican Whiteboy, we explored how cultural identity shapes personal experiences. These discussions encourage students to think critically and deeply about the world around them.\r\n\r\nYes! Many of my students have expressed that Mexican Whiteboy and Tears of a Tiger are among their favorite books, with some mentioning that they were the first books they've actually finished. The relatability of the characters has really resonated with them. For example, students who have faced challenges with identity, fitting in, or dealing with grief have felt a deep connection to the characters and their struggles. Some students who are not typically interested in reading have been especially engaged with these books because the stories are authentic and impactful.\r\n\r\nOne student in particular, who has often struggled with reading comprehension, told me that they found Mexican Whiteboy inspiring, as they could relate to the main character's struggles with fitting into both their Mexican and white communities. It sparked a lot of personal reflection for them, and they became more enthusiastic about reading and discussing the book in class.\r\n\r\nOverall, the emotional depth and the real-life situations presented in these books have helped engage even the most reluctant readers, turning these books into meaningful and memorable experiences for them.","fullyFundedDate":1726580789480,"projectUrl":"project/students-today-future-leaders-of-tomorr/8567904/","projectTitle":"Students Today, Future Leaders of Tomorrow","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Romero","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9019783_orig.jpg?crop=3347,3347,x0,y145&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1687185275710","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9019783"},{"teacherId":9019783,"projectId":8430442,"letterContent":"I hope this message finds you well. My apologies for the late communication. As an educator, I recognize the significant value of time in shaping the future of our students—whether they pursue careers as doctors, lawyers, teachers, or leaders in other fields. Throughout the 2024-2025 school year, I have made it a priority to equip my students with the necessary materials to ensure their success, not only in my classroom but across their entire academic journey.\r\n\r\nWhen I initially shared with my students that I had supplies readily available to support their learning, their excitement and gratitude were palpable. Witnessing their smiles was a truly rewarding experience. It is incredibly fulfilling to know that I am able to provide them with resources that contribute to their educational growth.\r\n\r\nAs we approach the end of the year, we are entering a crucial period of test preparation. Additionally, I am excited to announce that we will soon begin studying my favorite book to teach, The Outsiders.
