This was my first year coaching Battle of the Books ever, and I've learned a lot! There were 6 books I needed for 7th and 8th grade, and 6 books I needed for 6th grade. I wanted to have multiple copies of each book so that more than one student could read it at a time. \r\n\r\nMy team started with 13 students between 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Unfortunately, now I only have a 4th-grade team of four students. That said, I have loaned many copies out to students to read, and some of the kids who dropped out of the Battle of the Books program still want to read these books and have borrowed them! \r\n\r\nFor my 4 remaining students, they have loved reading our assigned books. We get together twice a week just to read! We talk about the books, and encourage each other to read more. They've also had tons of fun at the battles! I was able to buy a lot of high-interest chapter books while maintaining a low reading level (they are called HiLo books). The 6th graders in my school have been really into these, and have checked multiple books out from me! \r\n\r\nI bought a lot of books by the author Jake Maddox. He writes a lot of HiLo books. Better yet, most of his books are about a sport. With your help, I got books on girls volleyball, girls basketball, boys basketball, football, BMX biking, soccer, and even fishing! These books are a big hit with the 6th graders. Especially because 6th grade is the first year they can play sports in school! \r\n\r\nAs the middle school Literacy Interventionist (I help kids who struggle to read and write), I also provide optional, fun, book reports students can complete once they finish a book. By providing so many HiLo books to my students, many of them have taken the extra step to also complete a book report and write about what they've read! One specific moment that stood out was during a small group activity when students were working through a challenging lesson. Having a snack available helped them stay focused and regulated, and it created a calm, productive atmosphere. It also opened up natural opportunities to practice sharing, gratitude, and responsibility.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their faces lit up. Many of them immediately expressed excitement and gratitude. For some students, having consistent access to snacks brings a sense of security and comfort that allows them to fully engage in learning without distraction.\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue incorporating snacks into our classroom structure while we work on our current unit. As we move forward with collaborative projects and independent work time, these resources will help students sustain attention and participate fully. Because of you, my kindergarten students now have access to engaging, hands-on literacy materials that they absolutely love. The excitement when these materials arrived was immediate, and students have been eager and motivated during our literacy time.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite activities has been playing Mystery Word using the alphabet boxes and tubs to pull objects and create CVC words. Students are fully engaged as they choose an object, say each sound they hear, build the word with letters, and then write it. The tactile letters, puzzles, and sound-sorting activities have turned foundational reading skills into fun, meaningful experiences. Even students who once struggled to stay focused are now actively participating and excited to share their learning.\r\n\r\nI am truly grateful for your kindness and support. It has been a joy to share with all of our learners. If you have ever worked in a school or with youth, or have kids of your own, you may know that toys and snacks are always in high demand. Of course, over time toys break, snacks get devoured– so we really appreciate your generosity and willingness to keep our learners happy and satisfied.\r\n\r\nWhen we first began getting boxes of things from our Ðǿմ«Ã½ list in October, it felt like Christmas had come early! The learners on our caseload (who are frequent fliers in our Reg Room and participate in interventions such as Check-In/Check-Out, scheduled breaks, and Check & Connects) were extra excited, and many offered to help me unpack and put away our new goodies. They might not realize it now, but when they helped and wrote their \"thank-you\" cards, they were practicing key social-emotional skills, such as helping others, being kind, building confidence, and showing empathy and gratitude. These are some of the many skills we strive to help them develop. Additionally, learners participating in Check-In/Check-Out this past semester were even more motivated to meet their behavior goals after we received our donations.\r\n\r\nFor all elementary- and middle-level learners in our building, self-regulation is another skill that is crucial, which fidget toys help with immensely. I'm so grateful we now have a wide variety of fidgets to offer depending on a learner's specific sensory needs. We've also noticed an increase in learners asking for snacks from our room, which we are now happily able to provide. The fact that any learner can come to us and ask for a snack is a very special way to connect with everyone in our building.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you very, very much for your donations. It means everything to us to have donors looking out for our learners.","fullyFundedDate":1761255095167,"projectUrl":"project/snacks-and-fidgets-for-our-social-emotio/9704182/","projectTitle":"Snacks and Fidgets for Our Social-Emotional Learning/Regulation Room!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Alison","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10252579_orig.jpg?crop=716,716,x860,y450&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757536360958","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/selregroom"},{"teacherId":8431568,"projectId":9314766,"letterContent":"Our classroom care cart has already made such a meaningful difference for my students.
