They look forward to working independently, and many of them feel more successful than ever because they can navigate their learning programs confidently on their own.\r\n\r\nThe headphones have also become an important tool for student well-being. We received a variety of books that cover many Social Emotional Learning topics. One of our favorites is \"Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You\" by Sonia Sotomayor. The book explains physical and medical challenges some students might have, and how they manage them. It started a classroom conversation that allowed students to ask questions and share their thoughts in a safe accepting space. In addition to classroom discussions, we have encountered and learned many new vocabulary words. Read alouds are a truly engaging way to introduce new vocabulary to students and SEL read alouds are powerful tools to accomplish this!\r\n The classroom carpet has been a cozy place to share the books we received from our generous donor as well as other texts. In addition to being a spot to share stories, it has become our classroom meeting spot where we can share weekend news and hold morning meetings. The students are used to sitting at their desk, day after day. The flexible seating has made a huge impact. Many of my behavior challenging students have been striving to do well just to earn the opportunity to sit in the chairs. When the chairs are full, students are even asking to sit on the rug, as I have also provided pillows in that area. This has really helped create a safe space in the classroom. \r\n\r\nThe first time I introduced the games, many students began teaming up for games they were interested in playing. The games on brought out during indoor recess. These have allowed the students to still be kids and take a break from technology. These resources have fostered communication and teamwork. \r\n\r\nThe other resources donated have also been impactful. For example, the students have taken to responsibilities and will grab the vacuum whenever needed to clean the room. The teacher toolbox has given my desk area organization. The cart is utilized as a classroom podium when I am teaching. It has also been very useful to store math manipulatives for easy access during instruction to provide students with visual/ hands on representations of the lesson. \r\n\r\nI am currently looking into more ways to transform my classroom, so students are excited to come to school to learn.
