Our department has a reading focus and we have been scouring the internet to find appropriate books to add to our curriculum in all levels. These books will help level 1 through level 5. In our lower level 1 and 2 classes, we create a whole unit around a theme and pick a fitting novel. We read as a class, or in reading groups and students have to demonstrate comprehension with questions in a structured notebook, speaking tasks and writing reflections. In the upper levels, my students get independent reading time, where they are given open ended tasks to complete regarding characters, plot and new learning, for example, write three new words you learned today. \r\nThe most important part of the project was adquiring texts that are authentic, written for Spanish speakers. It is really difficult to find free resources online to use! These books are incredibly inclusive of diverse voices, which is an exact representation of how diverse my students are. It is vital that my students see themselves in my curriculum. The books also are about people that they recognize from history and relate to depending on their interests. This makes it easier for them to WANT to read. I am working with other teachers to create a unit to prepare students for the world cup. We want to incorporate texts about influential soccer athletes, and plan to use some of these books to help us provide authentic material.
