Getting \"those out of the norm\" school supplies for making traditional review and content activities a bit different and exciting can make all the difference in connecting with students. Using pool noodles to find the answer rather than just raising your hand is a silly, yet simple way to make learning fun. Using yarn to connect themes and evidence like a detective pin wall is way more fun then explaining connections in with a class discussion or powerpoint. Playing human bingo to review vocab terms adds a silly, yet memorable way to review material. Using cups and index card to stack and identify answers to earn points adds a competitive and kinesthetic means in which to learn and demonstrate content knowledge. These aren't supplies that you can just pick up from the office, but rather, these are the materials that transform a classroom. These texts, which cover a wide variety of topics and perspectives, allow students to build connections with novels that they may not have ever seen or heard of. In addition to this literary exposure, these novels are also something that inspire the reluctant reader to begin AND finish a novel, some of whom haven't done that in a long time. \r\n\r\nTwo of the novels in particular have been huge hits with my current Popular Literature class: \"The Great Cool Ranch Dorito in the Sky\" and \"The Castle School (for Troubled Girls).\" These novels, one told from the female lens and the other from a male point of view, dive deep into social-emotional issues and a variety of disorders that are highly relatable to teens and adults alike. \r\n\r\nThank you for helping my students engage in tough conversations through interesting texts!","fullyFundedDate":1746897056072,"projectUrl":"project/high-interest-diverse-stories-to-empowe/9245764/","projectTitle":"High Interest, Diverse Stories to Empower Student Reading Through Choice!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Warner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6645719_orig.jpg?crop=576,576,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1714596631657","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6645719"},{"teacherId":4889160,"projectId":8881858,"letterContent":"Adding more LGBTQIA books to our high school library has truly transformed our school community. Students now see their experiences and identities reflected on our shelves, which helps everyone feel recognized and valued. These books have sparked honest conversations about acceptance and understanding, making our school a more welcoming and supportive place for all.\r\n\r\nTeachers and students have noticed a real difference. The new titles have added depth to class discussions, giving students the chance to hear stories and perspectives they might not encounter otherwise. Our library now feels like a safer space where students can explore who they are, connect with one another, and learn why diversity matters so much. This positive change wouldn't have been possible without the generosity of our donors, and we are so grateful for the lasting impact they've made.","fullyFundedDate":1731779406422,"projectUrl":"project/reading-with-pride-growing-our-lgbtqia/8881858/","projectTitle":"Reading with Pride: Growing Our LGBTQIA Library Selection","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Barrette","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4889160"},{"teacherId":1679296,"projectId":9038166,"letterContent":"My students were blown away when we unveiled the new Sheeran looper and project materials from this Donors Choose project. Everyone immediately wanted to be the first to try out the new technology and start putting together their own musical projects. We even had a number of new students joining our classroom so they could try out some of the cool creativity tools Donors Choose has provided.\r\n\r\nThese tools allow students not only to engage in the classroom in a creative and exciting manner, but additionally allow students to showcase what they're doing with peers, and work with other students to come up with ideas that inspire, motivate, and become a catalyst for further engagement. Being that my classroom environment in which the tools get used is an advisory room, there is no specific assignment that requires the use of these tools, but that is part of what makes it so exciting to see kids engage! They are doing it because they want to do it, not because they're assigned to do it. There's genuine exploratory and student lead connections happening here! \r\n\r\nYour contributions have made all of this possible, and I can't thank you enough!
