Our class received five Lego architecture kits that the students will be building. In our middle school, each morning we have a period of time called advisory where students gather and work on various activities. My interest in acquiring these kits was to have my twenty advisory students work together in small groups on an activity that not only requires collaboration and teamwork, but also requires following some detailed directions. \r\n\r\nIt is common that many of the activities we do in advisory throughout the year are done individually and on a computer. Students use a great program called Tinkercad which allows them to design all sorts of things using a series of shapes. Once these designs are completed, they can be printed on our 3D printers. I currently have three or four projects that I do each year that allow students the ability to engineer small 3D structures that can then be printed.\r\n\r\nMy students, who are eighth graders, love 3D printing their models. They love having something tangible to walk away with at the end of the day that is a design of something that they created.\r\n\r\nI've yet to meet a student who doesn't find this aspect of technology interesting and entertaining, which is why I keep trying to update our equipment and stay relevant. But I think the personal fans were the biggest hit; they were plugged into my desktops and fanning everyone who walked by, lol! \r\nI know my students were kicking their summer break off right with all of these fun items to keep them from getting 'bored' this summer. It was also special for them to learn that other people, who wanted them to have a good summer, paid for the goodies they received. My students love coming into my classroom not just because they love coding, but because they love the 'vibe'. They are always scanning the room to see what new Harry Potter-themed items I have added to our classroom. Students say that they love how cozy and decorated my room is and your contributions to this project directly supported this! \r\nStudents also need a brain break from time to time, just to get off the computers and do something collaboratively, with their hands using their creativity and without having to attach a grade to their work. The multi-colored floss led to the creation of many, many friendship bracelets as well as fun conversations around the table. And the tissue paper was gobbled up to make beautiful paper flowers, many of which were taken home and given to moms for Mother's Day. \r\nThese supplies help create the intangibles that don't get included in the budget but do make a huge difference in the classroom. This project, in its entirety, is most students favorite throughout the year. It begins with using and understanding a basic CAD program. Once that is done, students work to engineer a phone stand. During this process, they have to use specific measurements to create a stand that has both a back and front supports. Utilizing specific support dimensions, as well as, specific dimensions of negative space, they have the ability to create a stand that not only encompasses some of their favorite animals or creatures, but also functions accurately. The success of this project would not be achievable without properly running 3D printers. With the mass amount of prints created in one school year, it is not uncommon for the printer to need occasional maintenance. This year, the extruder was in need of replacement. A key part of the 3D printer, the extruder literally melts the filament which creates the prints. Without your generosity, we would not have a functioning extruder and would not have a working 3D printer to print the awesome designs each student made.
