Immediately, the prospect of a graphic memoir made the students' ears perk up, even the ones who are usually not enthusiastic about reading. The first class after we started reading it, I got comments from more than one student saying how much they liked it so far and how they were excited to keep going.\r\n\r\nEven more than the graphic novel aspect though, it's been a lot of fun to see them curious and engaged about a different culture, exposing them to a new perspective that they're unfamiliar with. By going a few chapters at a time, we focus on reading questions meant to get them thinking about how their own experiences are similar and different to what we're reading. \r\n\r\nThank you again for making this happen! Literature has the power to illuminate the great complexity of the world like nothing else, and the earlier kids are able to discover that, the better off they'll be.","fullyFundedDate":1755688239255,"projectUrl":"project/engaging-reading-with-graphic-novels/9592453/","projectTitle":"Engaging Reading with Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Bober","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10175894"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_132594","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":121,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":63,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":35,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":60.0,"schoolId":132594,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Ocali Charter High School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Ocali Charter High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/marion-county-public-schools/ocali-charter-high-school/132594"}
