With exposing them to these texts it builds their background knowledge for the test. They learn about theme, analyzing characters, learn theories about characters based on what they did, said, thought, or felt about a situation, comparing and contrasting the kinds of people they are based on other characters in a story, paying close attention when an older, wiser character speaks because those words of wisdom usually reveal something telling about the characters and possible theme and reading expecting trouble and seeking clues as to how each character might respond. \r\n\r\nThe students been on high alert for moments when a character acts out of character or faces challenges. They have read and reread moments when a character does something unexpected or bold. They have considered who a character really is and why they are doing the things they are doing. They focus on their perspective or point of view and how it is influenced by their age, background, family, race, culture, gender, and other life experiences in stories. They have compared and contrasted settings across a story and analyzed how those settings directly impact the characters and their actions in stories.
