The class is highly engaged with science; they use the digital videos and print articles to master science vocabulary, practice writing in response to text, and explore careers in STEM. \r\n\r\nWe begin each lesson by watching a short video and responding to a prompt, then read the print article on the same topic to add to the evidence they collected. Students love gathering evidence on these engaging topics, and their writing has been exemplary. The magazines also strengthen their note-taking skills, academic discourse, and creative projects. \r\n\r\nThis past week, we have been studying physical and chemical changes. There was an article in the magazine about \"cooking with chemistry\". This article, along with our hands-on experiments, helped my class reach 95% on their recent unit assessment.\r\n\r\nThe students are so appreciative, and their families love to share what they are learning in class. \r\nWithout you, this would not have been possible — thank you for supporting public education.","fullyFundedDate":1760628580277,"projectUrl":"project/igniting-curiosity-with-superstem-magazi/9615753/","projectTitle":"Igniting Curiosity with SuperSTEM Magazines!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Campogni","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9820292"},{"teacherId":6496232,"projectId":8831607,"letterContent":"I would like to thank you for supporting our classroom. My students and I were so excited to receive the new materials. When I first introduced these materials to my class, my students wanted to explore each of them. \r\n\r\nThe Spectrum 5th Grade Test Practice books are currently being used with my students who are almost meeting expectations. These students need a boost in vocabulary and comprehension. With these books, I am able to pull small groups in my morning class, and then again in my afternoon class. These kids ask to meet with me to work in their books. Their confidence in answering questions has improved. They are able to explain the \"why\" behind their answers. \r\n\r\nThe Nonfiction Reading Comprehension Cards have been useful in my small groups teaching. These cards have introduced the students to new topics, including historical and scientific texts. They have practiced finding the main idea and supporting details, summarizing texts, and using text features to better understand what they are reading about. \r\n\r\nWhen students have completed all their classwork, they have \"can do\" activities to choose from. The Power Pen and Comprehension Card set is a new favorite. Students use the pen to choose the correct answer to the passage question. The pen has made reading more fun, and they are begging to use it!\r\n\r\nAgain, thank you so much for purchasing these engaging materials. These have helped increase the learning in our class. I love to teach my students that print resources are as valuable as digital resources. Students learn to \"search\" and then \"search\" again using a variety of methods. From note taking, to generating questions, to summarizing what they have learned - the valuable resource provided by Donors Choose really made a difference in our unit.\r\nStudents used the books to create Service Projects. The projects varied from helping the environment to helping feed the hungry. Students created bird houses from \"found\" bamboo to create a bird habitat in our garden. Students collected over 250 canned foods and non-perishable items to help feed the hungry at Christmas time. The food was donated to our local Oldsmar Cares organization. Students then used the resource tool to research \"Genius Hour\" passion projects.
