Our classes started out as being for students who are cognitively in-between Gen Ed and Self-Contained. We have recently taken on more students with, not only cognitive impairments, but behavioral and social disabilities, as well. We are helping students relearn communication and social skills, which are desperately needed for them to function and be productive in the world beyond high school. Thanks to you, we have been able to create a fun, interactive, electronics-free area where students are happy to spend time. Students can engage in activities to help them regulate emotions, learn to interact with people (not screens), practice fine motor skills, and take a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of a school campus housing over 2,600 other students. The high school environment, particularly times of transition, can be overwhelming and over-stimulating for our students. And with your help, our kiddos come in knowing that we have prepared a small \"sanctuary\" for them, our Zen Den. The Joe Milano chairs are perfect for our Den! Sturdy enough for high schoolers, yet still comfortable and \"cool.\" The students have participated in choosing activities for the Den, including two sand gardens, angry putty, a plasma ball, and more. Our kids have \"bought in\" to the purpose for and expectations of the Den, and we are seeing the results. Students are motivated to complete their work (to our standard), so they can spend a few minutes in The Den each class period. Overall student interactions have improved and are less contentious. Thank you, thank you for making a difference in the lives of our kids, and our classroom. P.S. - Teachers are asking about scheduling time to bring their students to The Den! And our kids think it is pretty cool that they are (finally) the ones other students envy:) We appreciate you! Blessings.","fullyFundedDate":1733797569824,"projectUrl":"project/special-needs-classroom-wish/8585067/","projectTitle":"Special Needs Classroom Wish","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Parker","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9566681"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_59973","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2469,"numTeachers":113,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":52.2,"schoolId":59973,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about George Jenkins High School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"George Jenkins High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/polk-county-school-district/george-jenkins-high-school/59973"}
