In the current state of English Language Arts education, it is rare that students get to read a whole book, much less such a contemporary piece. Typically, students are inundated with excerpts, prioritizing test preparation opposed to authentic engagement. Your generous support provided an opportunity for students to participate in an authentically engaging unit, analyzing a complex text from beginning to end alongside their peers. \r\n\r\nThe joy of this now rare experience was palpable in my classroom each day, sharpening my students literary analysis and critical thinking skills alongside their capacity for empathy and community. As our last unit of study, Kalanthi's text offered a platform for my students to apply the knowledge and skills they garnered throughout the year, culminating in a rich variety of writings and discussions which investigated the form and value of Kalanthi's message. Their ability to dissect the literary elements of the text and contextualize with the lived world were astounding. Students exhibited such initiative and interest, propelling the class far beyond my written lesson plans. \r\n\r\nBeyond the academic value, this book forged such a special bond within my classroom. Literature, despite being associated with the introverted, is such a communal experience. To laugh and cry with my students throughout the duration of this book made us all feel a little more human and connected. For my students with family members going through terminal illness, this book was medicine for their souls. Your contribution illuminated the magic of a good book and the gift of being human within my classroom. I cannot thank you enough for making that happen.","fullyFundedDate":1743902708718,"projectUrl":"project/breathe-in-read-on-class-set-when-bre/9237610/","projectTitle":"Breathe In, Read On.
