The magazines have turned our reading block into a space for exploration, curiosity, and meaningful discussion as students connect what they're reading to the world around them.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the articles to practice close reading skills, identify main ideas, and build vocabulary, but what I love most is seeing my students make real-world connections. Recently, we read an article about a powerful earthquake, which tied perfectly into our science unit on constructive and destructive forces. The kids were fascinated to see how what we'd studied in class was happening in real life. They asked great questions, made connections to our lessons, and were eager to learn more about how Earth's surface changes over time. These new materials have completely changed the way my students approach math.\r\n\r\nWe've been using the fraction tiles and pattern blocks during lessons on fractions and geometry, and it's been amazing to watch the \"aha\" moments happen when students can actually see and touch what they're learning. The dice and playing cards have quickly become favorites, and students use them almost daily for games like Flip and Plot Coordinate Grids, as well as various multiplication and division challenges. It was wonderful to see them using their creativity and critical thinking together to explore math, science, and art in fun new ways.\r\n\r\nIn our Radial Symmetry with Squares project, students used construction paper to create raised-relief sculptures while exploring patterns, symmetry, and the relationships between squares and triangles. As they folded, cut, and layered the paper, they were able to see physical changes happening, which made abstract concepts more concrete. This hands-on approach helped students connect math and art in a meaningful way, giving them a chance to think critically, experiment, and express their understanding visually. They were fully engaged the entire time, collaborating with peers, trying new ideas, and celebrating their creative successes.\r\n\r\nThe construction paper will also help with upcoming projects, like building fraction kits and constructing plant and animal cell models.
