With access to these new nonfiction and informational texts, students are developing stronger reading comprehension skills, expanding their vocabulary, and learning how to think more critically about what they read. They are practicing important skills such as identifying main ideas, making inferences, analyzing text features, and connecting what they read to real-world topics. These books have also introduced meaningful discussions, where students are learning to share their thoughts, listen to others, and support their ideas with evidence.\r\nIn my classroom, reading is active and engaging. During independent reading, students are choosing books that spark their curiosity and challenge their thinking. In small groups, they collaborate with peers to discuss ideas, ask questions, and explore different perspectives. During guided lessons, I am able to support students as they dive deeper into texts and build confidence in their abilities. The classroom has become a space where students are excited to read, eager to learn, and motivated to grow.\r\nI have already seen students light up with excitement when exploring these new books. Some of my more advanced readers are especially enjoying the challenge of higher-level texts, while other students are gaining confidence as they successfully understand and discuss new concepts. One student shared how they felt proud being able to explain a nonfiction topic to their classmates, while another couldn't wait to take their book home to continue reading. These moments show the true impact of this project, students are not only improving academically, but they are also discovering a genuine love for reading that will stay with them far beyond the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1769177056588,"projectUrl":"project/challenging-minds-through-reading/9998316/","projectTitle":"Challenging Minds Through Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Willingham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9801206"},{"teacherId":9801206,"projectId":9953023,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, our Pop-Up Reading Nights are transforming the way students experience literacy. Families were invited to participate, making reading a shared experience that strengthens home-school connections. Because of you, my students were able to put their skills in entrepreneurship, marketing, and business management into action while giving back to our school and neighborhood community. Using the canopy tent and Ninja slushie machine you provided, students planned and led a student-run refreshment and hospitality station at school and neighborhood events. Their goal was to create a welcoming space that offered free slushies, encouragement, and connection for families, visitors, and community members, and they succeeded beautifully.\r\nWhen students first saw the materials and realized they would be leading the entire experience, they were excited and proud. They took full ownership of the project by organizing setup, preparing refreshments, working as a team, and serving guests with kindness and professionalism. It was powerful to see students step into leadership roles and recognize that their knowledge and effort could make a positive difference for others, especially within our high-need, underserved school community.\r\nMoving forward, students are reflecting on their experience by discussing teamwork, leadership, and how service can be combined with real-world career skills. This project strengthened relationships within our school and surrounding neighborhood while reinforcing empathy, responsibility, and community pride.
