This gift has transformed how my students engage with literature and has become instrumental to our Unit curriculum focused on crime's psychological and emotional effects.\r\n\r\nMurder on the Orient Express has opened rich learning opportunities for my students. Through this novel, they are developing critical analytical skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Students are learning to identify how Christie constructs suspense and develops character motivation through dialogue and action, skills that transfer across all their reading. They practice locating specific textual details that support interpretations about perpetrators' psychological states and victims' experiences. This skill of evidence identification and evaluation will serve them well in all future academic work as well. The novel's exploration of justice, morality, and the psychological burden of guilt directly supports our unit's central question: How do crimes affect the psychological/emotional well-being of perpetrators, victims, families, or their community? Perhaps most importantly, students are developing comparative thinking skills by connecting the novel's exploration of crime's ripple effects to other unit texts like the short story \"Entwined\" and the \"Bully\" podcast, strengthening their ability to synthesize multiple sources for their informative essays.\r\n\r\nWith this donation, reading has become a shared, collaborative experience that looks quite different from our typical classroom routine. Rather than our usual 5-minute independent reading at the start of each class, we now dedicate substantial class time to reading Murder on the Orient Express together. This shift has been transformative for our learning community. As research supports, whole-class read-alouds create opportunities for students to hear the text's sophisticated language and pacing while building a sense of community and shared purpose. We pause frequently to analyze key moments—particularly scenes revealing characters' emotional responses to the crime and its investigation—and these guided discussions allow students to practice the close-reading strategies they will apply to their informative essay sources. Through shared annotations, students see modeling of how to mark up text effectively and engage in the kind of deep analysis that their essays will require. This collaborative approach has made the longer text format more accessible while maintaining rigor, allowing all learners to engage meaningfully with complex material, regardless of reading level.\r\n\r\nI've noticed particular enthusiasm from several groups of students, each engaging with the text in unique and meaningful ways. While the draw of a good mystery is great at engaging students, this novel has been a great way to build skills without the students realizing they are learning. Reluctant readers are more engaged with a physical book in hand and the social experience of reading together. Several students who typically resist assigned reading have begun voluntarily reading ahead, which speaks volumes about the power of this novel to capture their imagination. The best part of this engagement is that there are no screens! Advanced readers are diving deeper into Christie's craft, analyzing how she uses structure, multiple perspectives, and unreliable narration to explore guilt and complicity. Students interested in psychology and true crime have found authentic connections between the novel's exploration of motive and emotional consequence and the unit's essential question, and this genuine interest is energizing their essay research and deepening their engagement with the assignment.\r\n\r\nYour donation has enriched not only our curriculum but our classroom culture in ways that will resonate throughout this entire school year and many more to come. Students are more engaged, discussions are deeper, and their writing will be stronger because they have access to this exceptional text. Thank you for investing in my students' literacy and critical thinking skills, and for recognizing the power of literature to transform how young people understand the world.","fullyFundedDate":1771781843927,"projectUrl":"project/help-my-class-study-agatha-christie/10111276/","projectTitle":"Help My Class Study Agatha Christie","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Monette","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10438978"},{"teacherId":7940922,"projectId":9772321,"letterContent":"Thank you for providing the various supplies needed to successfully prepare and operate our school based enterprise. The materials caused many of the students to be excited and curious. After so much virtual learning, being able to touch, manipulate, and explore structures in three dimensions made the classroom feel like a true laboratory again.\r\n\r\nWith the donors' support, our next steps include deeper investigations into how organ systems interact. Students will conduct guided dissections that mimic human organ systems, analyze structure and function relationships, and create labeled anatomical sketches based on real observations. They will also work in collaborative groups to explain how disruptions in one system affect others, reinforcing critical thinking and communication skills. These hands on tools are helping students transition confidently back into active, inquiry-based learning while strengthening their understanding of the complexity of the human body.","fullyFundedDate":1678773762277,"projectUrl":"project/supporting-tools-in-learning-anatomy-and/7211896/","projectTitle":"Supporting Tools in Learning Anatomy and Physiology","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jeremy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7930038"},{"teacherId":7930038,"projectId":5670924,"letterContent":"My students and I have been using the new growing rack, lights, watering system, and plant holders to investigate how environmental factors affect plant growth. In class, students designed experiments comparing the growth of algae and chili pepper plants under different light intensities and watering schedules. One powerful moment was when students observed the rapid growth of the algae and began connecting it to real-world issues like algal blooms in Hawaiʻi's coastal ecosystems. At the same time, they carefully measured and tracked the height and leaf development of their chili pepper plants, discussing variables such as nutrient availability and photoperiod. When students first saw the materials set up in the classroom, they were genuinely excited as it transformed our space into a mini greenhouse laboratory. \r\n\r\nOur next steps involve students analyzing their collected data, graphing growth trends, and presenting their findings on which conditions optimized plant health. They will then transplant their strongest chili pepper seedlings to take home or contribute to a community garden, continuing their investigation beyond the classroom. Students will also explore how controlled plant growth systems relate to sustainable agriculture practices in island environments, reinforcing their responsibility to care for our ʻāina.","fullyFundedDate":1629306329696,"projectUrl":"project/scientific-investigation-through-classro/5670924/","projectTitle":"Scientific Investigation Through Classroom Gardening","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jeremy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7930038"},{"teacherId":9651507,"projectId":9712346,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donations!
