The new classroom rug has created a comfortable gathering space where students come together for read-alouds, discussions, and mini-lessons. During reading time, students sit together on the rug while we analyze characters, discuss themes, and practice citing text evidence to support our thinking. The new graphic novels and I Survived books have been especially exciting for students because they combine high-interest stories with important literacy skills like making inferences, understanding point of view, and identifying key details in informational and historical texts. These books have helped many students build reading stamina and confidence while exploring topics like resilience, history, and teamwork.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and collaborative. Students often annotate passages using the new felt pens, discuss questions in small groups, and share their ideas with the class. The social studies workbook has also helped students strengthen their understanding of civics and historical thinking by connecting reading skills with real-world topics. The snacks and small fidgets have made a big difference in helping students stay focused during longer reading and writing blocks. Sometimes a quick snack or something small to keep their hands busy helps students regulate their attention so they can fully participate in lessons.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled to stay engaged during reading time are now eager to pick up a book. The I Survived series has been particularly popular with students who enjoy fast-paced historical stories, while others gravitate toward the graphic novels because the visuals help them better understand the narrative. I have seen students who once avoided reading now volunteering to read aloud or recommending books to their classmates. Because of your support, our classroom has become a space where students feel comfortable, motivated, and excited to learn. Thank you for helping create an environment that supports both their academic growth and their love of reading.","fullyFundedDate":1771772465203,"projectUrl":"project/fueling-readers-books-rewards-and-a-c/10110286/","projectTitle":"Fueling Readers: Books, Rewards, and a Cozy Learning Space","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8504690_orig.png?crop=452,452,x0,y45&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1660356598617","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8504690"},{"teacherId":8504690,"projectId":10069421,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students now have access to powerful novels that have transformed our reading time into something meaningful and engaging. Each of these books—Flush, Tuck Everlasting, Refugee, and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry—has allowed students to practice important literacy skills such as identifying theme, analyzing characters, making inferences, and supporting their ideas with text evidence. As we read together, students learn how to ask deeper questions about the text, discuss different perspectives, and connect historical and social issues in the stories to the world around them.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and collaborative. Sometimes we read aloud together and pause to talk about what is happening in the story. Other times students work in small discussion groups where they share ideas, debate characters' choices, and cite specific quotes from the text to support their thinking. These novels also support our writing instruction, as students practice explaining their opinions, analyzing conflicts in the story, and using evidence from the book to defend their ideas.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled to stay engaged during reading have been especially excited about these books. Many students were drawn into Flush because of its environmental mystery and connection to the ocean, which resonates strongly with our community. Others became deeply invested in Refugee and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, showing empathy for the characters and asking thoughtful questions about fairness, justice, and history.
