These high-interest, accessible texts are especially powerful for reluctant and emerging readers, providing short, manageable passages that build confidence and encourage independent reading.\r\n\r\nStudents will engage in repeated reading as they revisit favorite jokes, strengthening fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary—particularly through wordplay and puns. Additionally, joke books naturally promote oral language development as students share what they read with peers, teachers, and family members, fostering both communication skills and social connection.\r\n\r\nThis project will also support our multilingual learners by offering approachable text that reduces barriers to participation while encouraging joyful interaction with language. By creating positive, laughter-filled reading experiences, students will begin to associate reading with enjoyment rather than challenge.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this collection will help cultivate a lifelong love of reading by showing students that books can be both meaningful and fun.","fullyFundedDate":1773842513494,"projectUrl":"project/laughing-into-literacy/10149475/","projectTitle":"Laughing Into Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Knam","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3096016_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1504199612790","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/frontier-library"},{"teacherId":3096016,"projectId":10013305,"letterContent":"This project will empower even our youngest students to become informed, responsible stewards of the Earth. This initiative was designed to build essential background knowledge in American history, science, and geography through immersive, experiential learning.\r\n\r\nSince implementation, the VR technology has significantly enhanced instruction for our ML students. Many of our learners were born outside the United States and are developing academic understanding while simultaneously acquiring English. The virtual experiences have provided meaningful context for classroom lessons—allowing students to explore historical landmarks, observe scientific phenomena, and visualize concepts that previously felt abstract or unfamiliar.\r\n\r\nThe teacher has reported increased student engagement and students are more confident participating in discussions, making connections to texts, and demonstrating understanding in both oral and written responses. The visual and interactive nature of VR has been especially impactful for students who benefit from language supports.\r\n\r\nBeyond academic gains, this project has promoted equity by providing access to experiences that many students would not otherwise have due to financial and geographic barriers. Virtual reality has allowed us to bring the world into our classrooms—creating inclusive learning opportunities that honor the diverse backgrounds of our students while supporting their success.\r\n\r\nThis project has made a meaningful and lasting difference in our school community.
