So far, I've opened up the finger puppets and had two incredibly successful lessons with the kindergarteners. This allows each child to have their own copy of a high-quality text to use during our reading and writing lessons. \r\n\r\nThe most current research about how our brains learn, read, and process information suggests that in order for people to understand what they read, they need to have background information about the topic. It is also important to read a text closely, more than once, and for different purposes, to make as much meaning as possible from the text. With our new reading and writing curriculum, students go through several \"content stages\" with each text. They notice and wonder, organize what is happening in the text, dig deeper to make more meaning, infer the central idea of the text, and then synthesize what knowledge they have gained from reading the text. When each child has their own copy, they can use post-its to track their thinking throughout the book in each of the stages. This makes for a more meaningful engagement with all of our lesson texts.\r\n\r\nIn third grade our students are also learning to write four-paragraph essays! We use our texts as we learn how to plan and write the different components of informational and opinion essays. So far in our current unit, students are using their individual copies of Starry Messenger to gather text evidence to support their opinion about whether Galileo's most important contribution to astronomy was his telescope or the book he wrote about his observations. I am amazed by how much their writing has progressed since the beginning of the year!\r\n\r\nThank you so much for making all of this amazing learning possible!","fullyFundedDate":1765241196692,"projectUrl":"project/building-knowledge-with-high-quality-tex/9938573/","projectTitle":"Building Knowledge With High Quality Texts!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Schwartz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10365536_orig.jpg?crop=240,240,x0,y21&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1764638501753","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10365536"},{"teacherId":49121,"projectId":9654213,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for these titles! Because of your generosity, our classroom has truly been transformed into a space that reflects who my students are as learners and as people.\r\n\r\nWith the new flexible seating options students now have real choice in how and where they learn. During independent reading time, some students curl up with a book on the floor cushions, while others choose a seat that allows them to gently move as they focus. I've noticed students sustaining their attention longer, transitioning more smoothly between activities, and taking greater ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nOne moment that stands out happened during a literacy discussion. A student who is usually hesitant to participate chose a seat that made them feel comfortable and grounded. That day, they raised their hand to share a thoughtful connection between our text and a current social issue we were studying. It was a small moment, but it reflected something much bigger, students feeling safe, confident, and valued enough to take risks.\r\n\r\nYour support has helped create a classroom environment rooted in creativity, curiosity, joy, and human dignity. My students aren't just consuming information, they're reflecting, building ideas together, and learning how to express themselves with confidence. Flexible seating has made our classroom more inclusive and responsive to individual needs, and that impact reaches far beyond academics.\r\n\r\nThank you for being part of our story and for investing in a student-centered space where every learner can feel comfortable, inspired, and ready to do their best work.
