Over the next several weeks, my students will be completing book report projects, and a number of them have enthusiastically chosen this series for their independent reading. I am excited that they will be able to engage with these texts while continuing to grow their skills in English Language Arts.\r\n\r\nThrough this series, students will be exploring standards RL.8.1, RL.8.2, RL.8.4, and W.8.4 by analyzing themes, developing summaries, and writing thoughtful reviews. Your donation allowed me to purchase my students the necessary supplies and wonderful learning materials we have already put to use. Having an updated pencil sharpener and brand new pencils, construction paper, and other supplies has allowed my students to write, draw, and complete assignments smoothly every day. When my students saw the bright construction paper and colorful learning supplies, they became excited! They couldn't wait to dig right in to create and show their classmates.\r\n\r\nThe new games and manipulatives will also go a long way. We already used the Pizza Fraction Fun Game to reinforce what we learned about fractions during math, and have used our conversation cubes to stimulate great conversation while learning about social-emotional skills. They were excited to see Jenga, memory games, and even Christmas Bingo. Students were laughing, cheering each other on, and learning how to work together during game time. Learning was taken to the next level as these materials allow students of all learning levels to interact and engage with one another.\r\n\r\nIn the future, we hope to continue to use the games and manipulatives during lessons to help my students grow academically and socially. We will continue to use the fraction game as well as block games during small group rotations to reinforce math skills and logic. The conversation cubes allow students to learn how to better communicate, show empathy, and express themselves. We can even sneak some Christmas Bingo in there to build community and celebrate while helping students learn! We've been using them during our core lessons, and one standout moment was when students worked together on a hands-on project that allowed them to apply what we've been learning in a more interactive and engaging way. I watched students who are usually hesitant to participate take the lead, explain their thinking to classmates, and stay focused longer than usual with the addition of all the fidgets and sensory items. \r\n\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the students were so excited. The students gathered around as we unpacked everything. Several students mentioned how \"homey\" the classroom felt with the addition of the lights, bean bag, food, and fidgets. They really appreciate the set up because the students mentioned they don't have such nice stuff like this at home. \r\n\r\nBecause of your support, these additional resources are helping them build confidence, independence, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning that will continue well beyond this classroom environment. We believe this positive acknowledgement for their various accomplishments (attendance, academics, and character building) has brought about a positive culture shift to Wilson. \r\n\r\nThe speaker was also perfect to have our school wide dance! We have been working on visual one-pagers for the short stories we've read so far this year. Rikki Tikki Tavi was a favorite read.
