Since we have been at it for a few weeks now I am happy to report what a success it has been and how it drew the students together and made our classroom community stronger. Your thoughtfulness has enriched our classroom in so many ways. When we first received the chairs and tables, the students were so excited to see what was in the boxes. Once I opened them, they loved them! They took turns testing them out and were all very pleased with how comfortable the chairs were. We immediately made lists of what groups of children could use the chairs on what days so that everyone could have regular turns. \r\n\r\nIn my small groups, we spend 2-3 days reading a leveled text and then 2-3 days responding in writing to the text we have read. Students like to sit in the comfy chairs, place the book on the lap desk, and follow along as we read together or turn them to face a friend for partner reading. On writing days, they get out their journals and respond to the prompt individually or in pairs. They are much more likely to be focused and on task when using the comfy chairs and desks.\r\n\r\nMy students primarily come from low income homes and many have experienced some form of trauma. Many of my students or their parents have moved from another country and are likely experiencing some stress in the current political climate. Students learn to listen carefully, follow patterns, and understand how stories can be told not just with words, but through song and motion. This combination has strengthened their reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence in sharing their voices.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become an energetic, collaborative experience. Students gather together to sing, read, and act out stories while discussing what they hear and imagine. The joy and engagement are contagious—especially for students who once felt shy about reading aloud. With the fulfillment of my Donors Choose project last spring, I was able to create a space in my classroom this fall for students to enjoy reading. The bookshelf is a focal point and draws my students in. They love to pick a book and sit and read. They also are loving playing the reading games. The new inference game is a much-requested game to play on game day Friday! My students love to use the book bags on the back of their chairs to access their materials. I personally am using the cart and containers to stay organized. The card stock and lamination pages are being used to make fun reading games.\r\n\r\nMy students were beyond excited when they saw the bookshelf. They couldn't wait to spin the bookshelf around pick a book to read. I am hoping that by starting each group out with students picking a book and quietly reading for 10 minutes before we begin our lesson they will look forward to coming to group and will see reading positively and not negatively. I can honestly say that so far this is the case! As a reward, I have game day Friday where students pick reading games to play. Their faces lit up when I was able to present new games for them to choose from.\r\n\r\nMy next steps are to continue building my space to be a comforting, inviting space. I had to move spaces over the summer, so my new space needs some TLC. I have created a new Donors Choose project to add fun seating to my reading area as well as some items to help keep my space free from distractions. For many of my students, school is their safe haven, and I hope to continue to make my space a spot for students to learn to read, want to read, and in turn, love to read. Thus giving them an escape from some of the tough home lives in which they live.","fullyFundedDate":1746585760140,"projectUrl":"project/a-fun-bookshelf-to-promote-a-love-for-re/9034548/","projectTitle":"A Fun Bookshelf to Promote a Love for Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Clary","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8627406"},{"teacherId":10061066,"projectId":9426506,"letterContent":"As a first-year teacher, I am incredibly grateful for the generosity and support that made this project possible.
