I don't want to read about elves and dwarves and whatever the heck a hobbit is! And admittedly, the groaning did not stop as they began reading. After we got a few chapters into the book, something changed. A few of the students started to thoroughly enjoy the novel, and would say so when they came into class. One student said that he thought the book was \"peak.\" They would tell me how much they were enjoying it, and they would talk to their friends to convince them of the novel's greatness as well. \r\n\r\nAt the time of writing this letter, we are nearing the end of the book, and the students are now fully invested. This book offers so many opportunities for rich discussions about character development, the importance of setting, and narrative structure. Through studying Bilbo's growth and changes over the course of the novel, they have come to really care about him and the adventure he is on. They have written at length about how the dwarves' opinions of him have grown so much, and they've been able to feel a great deal of sympathy for the plight of the dwarves. My students have now done such a high volume of in-depth reading, giving them the time and space to practice and refine their literacy skills. If we want our students to read more and for longer stretches of time, we need to give them books they can enjoy and sink their teeth into. The Hobbit has been a great example of such a book. \r\n\r\nThis novel has been a beacon of light and warmth in the cold darkness of a New England winter. The support my class was given was inspiring, heart warming, and is greatly appreciated. I am so lucky that I get to talk about The Hobbit every week as part of my job. This would not have been possible without the help we received. From the bottom of our hearts, my students and I wish to express our deepest gratitude to our donors and to the Donor's Choose platform for making all of the fun and learning possible.","fullyFundedDate":1760908016009,"projectUrl":"project/a-story-to-learn-why-we-explore-and-adve/9835138/","projectTitle":"A Story to Learn Why We Explore and Adventure","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. David","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10314655_orig.jpg?crop=1673,1673,x977,y1058&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1760921272176","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10314655"},{"teacherId":1393719,"projectId":9731113,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for buying these titles for our classroom library! I can't wait to read about their favorite books, their biggest success in school, and their biggest challenge in life. They also have the option to write down questions that they may not feel comfortable asking in front of other students yet. So far, the only two questions have been \"Do you think I should name my cat Augustus or Hercules?\" and \"Who can I suggest more vegetarian lunch options to?\" I love this!\r\n\r\nSophomores read Ruta Sepetys' historical novel Between Shades of Gray for their summer assignment and are currently completing character profiles to help them review for their upcoming assessments.
