This also meant that we were able to repair a few more instruments, so students did not have broken instruments being a barrier to producing a good sound.\r\n\r\nThey were able to take practice pads home and work on their technique. In class, they could get up and get themselves a reed instead of having to wait for a parent to be able to afford a pack of reeds with their next paycheck. The funding for the STEAM projects has allowed my students the opportunity to think and learn beyond the textbook. The hands-on activities allowed for cooperative learning to occur. \r\nThe students had to first make a prediction of how to assemble the project. They then compared that with the instruction that came with the project. From there the students were able to build the activity, but had to note what was easy, difficult, interesting and any observations they made. Once the project was completed, students had to write up paragraphs about the activity and what they learned.\r\nThe students got to work alone or with a partner. The snacks that have been provided not only motivate my students, but help out when they are hungry. Working in an urban, high-poverty area is a challenge. Through your generosity students know I have snacks readily available. \r\nThe snacks have also provided help during testing. The end of the year is a stressful time for students compounded with all of the state and district testing that they are required to complete. The funding has allowed my Critical Thinking students to actively engage in hands-on learning! So far we have completed a few projects as seen in the photos and cannot wait to do more. I have extended this project to include students using the materials only to come up with their own directions prior to being given the one for the project. This has increased their problem-solving skills. Students must also work together to build the project.
