My students were so excited when I introduced our new STEM materials! They couldn't wait to begin working with them! I explained how to use each one and then let them explore! \r\n\r\nMy students are gifted so they need hands-on activities that challenge them. These puzzles and building materials provide opportunities for them to use their problem-solving and critical thinking skills along with their creativity skills.\r\n\r\nAfter our spring break, I have planned an architecture unit. Students will draw simple shapes and practice using the chompsaw to cut them out of recycled cardboard and make a 3-D art project with their shapes. After they have mastered the chompsaw, they will work in teams to design a tree house using cardboard and the saw. Our students have absolutely loved using the new color printer. One of their first projects was creating a Book of Monsters. Each student designed their own monster, wrote specific directions for someone else to draw it, and then compared the two illustrations. The results were adorable! We used the printer's copy feature to place their original drawings and typed directions together on the same page, giving the final book such a polished look.\r\n\r\nRight now, students are working on brochures for Christmas Around the World. They are so excited to \"publish\" their work in our classroom and are thrilled to choose from so many types and colors of paper. Not only does our new equipment print in color, but it also allows me to scan and copy anything we might need! \r\n\r\nAs we were putting together our display boards for the First Lego League Family Night, the kids were able to see their digital work come to life in an instant! We were able to print those pages and display them directly in the boards. The kids were so proud of their work!\r\n\r\nSince then, the copier/printer has made tasks that used to require squeezing in time during my planning to get to the common printer and back into a task that barely requires a thought... just the push of a button.
