I wasn't always a huge fan of science growing up because it wasn't super fun to me and sometimes, I just didn't \"get it\", so I love that I can introduce science to my young students in a way that is fun, engaging, and meaningful to them. For example, the weather globes with the trees in them that have seasonal color changes is one of the items that my students were so interested in when we opened the boxes. I loved how the questions and curiosity were instant!\r\nI have one student in particular who doesn't really socialize or play with others much, and is very quiet most of her day at school, and she's still finding what works for her and what she's interested in. When I introduced her to the magnet wands and magnetic chips, she showed an immediate interest in this material, and this is usually her go-to toy of the day. I love that for her, and for all my students. \r\nWe're learning that science is all around us and can be tons of fun, and a lot of this exploration is possible thanks to donors like you who understand the importance of what's happening everyday in our classrooms. That also sparked a fire in me to want to provide them with an even greater experience learning about \"outer space\"! The telescope came in and the students were so excited to open it and get it put together and see space! We talked about what the instruction booklet helps us do, and then we worked on putting the telescope together (with a little assistance from our one of our administrators!)\r\nOnce we got it put together, the magic began! Mental health and social-emotional health and regulation are so important to me and teaching my students how to manage these things is also very important. Having our cozy and safe space in the classroom means it's a place they can go when they may need to take a break from the busy-ness of a classroom, calm their bodies, and/or release certain emotions. Using the feelings chart and the emotions sensory bottles are ways that I help teach my students about feelings and what they mean and how to express them. Since using these materials, the students are becoming more familiar with the cozy corner and how and when to use it. I heard one of the students say to another one \"You need to take a break!\" It was wonderful! He took the little boy's hand and walked him over to the corner and then walked away. The plastic bins came in handy because I was able to put several of the colored links and the counting cones, as well as the miniature building bricks/legos in them and allow the students to work in small groups to explore the activity. This also gives the students the opportunity to work on social skills and collaborate.\r\nSeveral of the students came up with several wonderful creations with the items, and the counting links were helpful for the students with counting, fine motor, comparing and measuring.\r\nI could go on for days about all the wonderful things my students are learning and all the skills they are gaining with these toys.
