Grade level wide projects are often cost-prohibitive, so the students were beyond delighted for this project recognizing its qualitative infrequency. Thank you for enabling it!\r\n\r\nMy specific class's purpose is to introduce careers and the related pathways for pursuing them to the students. We are currently studying aviation: discussing the various jobs related to that career field and doing hands-on projects related to it. The fourth graders spent time studying the four forces of flight and the balsa wood gliders served as a 'finale' event for them. They were able to apply their knowledge of those forces, hypothesize modifications to improve their gliders' performance, and then do the modifications accordingly to test their hypotheses. I was impressed by some of their ideas and successful executions of them, as you can see in the attached photos. Piloting and aerospace engineering were fruitfully brought to life via the gliders. Currently, we are going through the short video tutorials on Make.do's website and familiarizing ourselves with the tools and how to use them. All of the students are in disbelief that the tools are not sharp yet effective in cutting cardboard, quickly followed by triumph and puffed up chests when they succeed in cutting the cardboard as desired. This type of activity at a minimum serves as a nice change of pace from typical sedentary desk work, but for many it is an opportunity to showcase a personal strength in a relevant skill that is not directly academic in nature.\r\n\r\nThese tools are being introduced to the students in our unit on construction careers. When discussing jobs, it so much more impactful to have some sort of hands-on activity to accompany the discussion(s) to contextualize the demands of the job. In this case, discussing the necessity of task sequencing, thinking three dimensionally, and grasping the abstract concept of structural soundness. Additionally, this particular type of activity offers an opportunity to subscribe the academically disinclined to the core subjects since they directly experience the necessity of those subjects inherent in the tasks (math: measuring; science: load bearing). \r\n\r\nOur closing activity in this unit will be constructing a 'village' out of appliance boxes.
