They also delve into characters who are struggling to comprehend that students with disabilities aren't 'broken', but are capable and strong in so many different ways. Throughout both books, the characters, and thus the readers, learn a lot about others and themselves. These books sparked a lot of great discussions and really made my students think about how they think about other people who are different from them and how we can be more accepting and loving to those around us. It also made them think about what makes a good friend and how sometimes the things we wish for aren't really what we want. \r\nMy students read the book, Rules, independently, but at the same pace so that we could explore the book with discussions about characters, setting, plot and vocabulary. We use the book to explore big ideas, as discussed above. We also use the book to teach comprehension strategies, like questioning, predicting, inferring, visualizing, summarizing, retelling, etc. \r\nWhile we didn't have time to do a novel study with Fish in a Tree, I have several students who have chosen to read it on their own for their independent reading book. My teammates (other 4th grade teachers) are also using it as a whole group read aloud in their homerooms. The students who are reading this book or listening to it are excited about the connections they are making to Rules and their existing schema. \r\nThank you again for providing the books and the opportunity to open the eyes of my students to an important topic and two outstanding books!","fullyFundedDate":1764784358758,"projectUrl":"project/overcoming-obstacles/9579473/","projectTitle":"Overcoming Obstacles","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Pavalis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9986834"},{"teacherId":9986834,"projectId":9579606,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your contribution to two very worthwhile projects! Your donation helped me purchase resources to support the teaching of notable Black Americans and Native Americans to my 4th graders. The resources are written at a reading level that is accessible to my students and supplies important and relevant information on noteworthy people and Montana tribes. I was also able to get resources to help students organize their research, as it is a hard skill for students to pick out important information from reading passages. \r\n\r\nStudents are turning their research into puppet shows to entertain and inform their audience about an important person and an event that shaped who they were and why they're famous. The students are very engaged and have learned a lot about many influential Black Americans. I have yet to start our Native Americans unit, but will be starting it soon. I am really excited for students to be able to learn about Montana tribes while using resources that are at their level. Students will then be able to build trioramas to display what they've learned. The materials you helped purchase have been put to good use on many projects already. Most recently, my students used the colored pencils and markers to complete environmental awareness and impact posters. They were so excited to be able to use new juicy markers and sharp colored pencils! \r\n\r\nAdditionally, the brand new #2 pencils have been a life saver as the ones we had for our classroom supply were starting to go missing and the ones that were left didn't have good erasers because we are excellent at fixing mistakes! I can't even begin to tell you the joy that new glue sticks bring to students. You should see their faces light up when they take the cap off and exclaim \"I got a brand new one!\". Every Friday we are able to have a day to spend with our students to introduce a STEM activity. Our 4th and 5th grade students are using the new Ozobot Evos to learn how to code/ program. It is a skill that students will need for years to come. This type of coding is so much fun that they don't even know that they are learning something new. \r\n\r\nYou will never know how much your generosity means to my students and myself.
