In science, we have been learning about simple machines but the K'Nex Kits have given my students the opportunity to build levers, pulleys, and many other machines that use gears. One of the most rewarding moments was when students began working in groups to create complex machines that combined all of these basic ideas. My 4th graders' creations mirrored the beginning of Rube Goldberg machines. I have been asked countless times to let them add more to their machines. They absolutely love it! Students will continue to use these tools to demonstrate understanding and mastery of science concepts. \r\n\r\nWe have been using the Building Blocks and Magnetic Building Sticks to explore terms in math like: area and perimeter. Students were presented with both materials and asked to demonstrate the difference in these ideas. The classroom was immediately filled with \"Well area is... and perimeter is... so we should...\" The verbal feedback was music to my ears because the students could explain the ideas but watching them experiment and struggle with trial and error in their demonstrations was irreplaceable. Learning was happening. The magnetic sticks showed shapes with only the perimeter highlighted, legos became arrays, and surface area was easily explored on 3-dimensional shapes. By the end of the lesson they understood the difference between the two, how to find each, and how to discuss their ideas with peers. Some students even tried to explain the difference to our high needs/lower learning students showing mastery and understanding.","fullyFundedDate":1733177228417,"projectUrl":"project/stem-building-supplies-new-4th-grade-sci/8804607/","projectTitle":"STEM Building Supplies-New 4th Grade Science Teacher","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McMaster","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9766454"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_106178","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":174,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":35,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":87,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"4 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.3,"schoolId":106178,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Frenchtown Intermediate School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Frenchtown Intermediate School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/montana/frenchtown-school-district-40/frenchtown-intermediate-school/106178"}
