Students are in motion, their eyes are looking up instead of looking down on a worksheet. Their fingers are gripping a writing tool practicing their handwriting. There are no tablets in my room, all 'live action'. \r\n\r\nI have one particular student who sometimes has a bad attitude entering my class, but when I tell him we are going to use the standing, rolling, whiteboard, or the pocket chart lesson, he exclaims, 'I LOVE this'. His demeaner becomes positive. What a plus for all of us! \r\n\r\nVertical learning is becoming popular in the education arena. Before, students often had trouble finding books they were interested in or matching books back to the correct place. Now, with labeled bins and organized shelves, they can quickly and independently find books that fit their interests and reading levels.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new library setup, they were so excited. They immediately wanted to explore all of the bins, talk about which categories they wanted to read from, and help organize the books. Many students commented that it felt \"like a real library.\"\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was during our independent reading time. Students were able to quickly find books on topics they love and settle into reading without needing extra help. It has also helped students become more responsible about returning books to the correct places and taking care of our library.\r\n\r\nAs we continue building strong reading habits, students will use these resources to support book shopping, reading groups, partner reading, and independent reading time. Although enriching story times are built-in to our daily schedule and curriculum, providing my students with another option to independently listen to a story and navigate through a book will allow my students to feel confident and excited when reading books. \r\n\r\nMy students love that they are able to independently choose a story and listen to it with their peers. They love that the listening center is situated in a cozy corner of our classroom with pillows, so they are able to listen and relax at the same time. My students are able to engage with the content of the stories in a different way than they are able to during whole-group \"read-alouds\".
