It allows them to engage in learning while meeting their sensory needs, leading to improved attention and participation. The storage baskets and nameplates have helped create a more organized and structured environment, giving each student ownership of their materials and reducing distractions, especially important for students who struggle with organization and attention.\r\n\r\nThe Post-it easel pads have enhanced our instruction by allowing us to capture thinking, model strategies, and make learning more visible and interactive. Instead of one or two of the same group of students participating – all students are engaged in the learning process. \n\tThe white boards that were so graciously donated have shifted the focus from teacher-led instruction to student centered, active thinking and collaboration. The boards are the most critical tool in the framework of a Thinking Building Classroom. The boards are specifically designed to stand vertically and are on a non-permanent surface. The design is to ensure that students’ thinking is visible, encourages collaboration, and reduces anxiety. The boards have become a shared space that occupies one shared marker encouraging the groups to talk and collectively share their ideas. \n\tThe minute the boards arrived our class took off with the concept. We use the boards almost daily. The way it works is students immediately grab their boards and find a place within the classroom. I will present a task for the groups to problem solve while students stand at their boards. The group discussions start immediately. At any point you will hear student’s say, “Let’s try, I love that idea, I agree, but let try another way, how should we model this idea, can you explain how you came up with that idea.” Math talk has become enriched. The student with the marker starts writing, drawing, creating models, and erasing (if need be) to solve the problem. While students are working, I will walk around to ask questions, to engage in their ideas and find ways where they can expand their knowledge in hopes of leading them to new insights. At the end we come together as a group to collaborate and consolidate our ideas. I will often ask what patterns we see within our ideas, ask who would like to explain a group’s idea. We will try to make connections to real world concepts. \n\nEver since the boards have arrived there is a buzz in the air. Each student feels like they are a part of the problem solving experience and each day feels like a new experience. The best part is I have found ways to expand this concept not only into math, but into our writing, phonics, and science. \nThank you again for providing the opportunity for educators to purchase essential tools that help build lifetime thinkers.\n\nSincerely,\nMrs. French\n","fullyFundedDate":1768180822487,"projectUrl":"project/building-thinkers-not-just-answer-gette/10005707/","projectTitle":"Building Thinkers, Not Just Answer Getters","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. French","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8706277"},{"teacherId":10401835,"projectId":10008238,"letterContent":"Thank you very much for your donations and allowing us to be part of this program! The addition of vertical whiteboards in our classroom has had a powerful impact on students' daily learning experiences. From the moment they walk in, there is a noticeable excitement as they see the boards ready for use. This enthusiasm carries throughout the day, as students eagerly engage with lessons in a more active and hands-on way. The boards have transformed the classroom into a space where learning feels dynamic, visible, and shared.\r\n\r\nStudents have taken great pride in using the whiteboards responsibly, understanding that they are valuable tools that support their growth. They work thoughtfully, ensuring the boards are used appropriately and cared for, which has strengthened their sense of ownership and accountability. More importantly, the vertical space encourages collaboration—students gather to solve problems, explain their thinking, and learn from one another. Whether working through math problems, brainstorming ideas in writing, or exploring concepts in science, they are consistently communicating and building understanding together.\r\n\r\nAcross all subject areas, these whiteboards have become an essential part of our learning environment. They promote movement, discussion, and deeper engagement, allowing students to express their ideas more freely and confidently.
