We are able to have thematic units that incorporate skills across our curriculum. This has allowed my students to make connections and explore different topics throughout the year. We've used these texts to introduce fiction and nonfiction as well as partner different nonfiction books with a fiction book about the same topic. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we read the same book for 3-5 days to help students work on foundational skills like turning pages, identifying author/illustrator and other text features. We also use the repetition to help us answer questions and retell the story. The items that we were able to get for my classroom have made center a lot more fun for my students which in turn has made them more engaged in centers. At the same time it has allowed them to practice their blending and reading skills. The book library and book buddies have given my students the opportunity to bring more books home on their level to practice reading. Giving them the opportunity to work on their reading fluency. As a result all my students have improved in their middle of the year reading scores some even surpassing their targeted goals.
