Each student has their own personal maintenance pouch that they use each day. This is just a small portion of the items that we have used each day. This project allowed us to stock and run three separate chemistry labs across three class periods over the course of second semester. It led to several important discussions (and in a few cases, impromptu demonstrations) about lab safety and a lot of piqued interest and discoveries! \r\n\r\nStudents were excited to get hands-on time, since we've not had very much of it this year. Students remarked about \"the difference between talkin' about it all the time versus seeing it happen\" with regards to precipitation reactions with at least one begrudging admittance of \"I get why we did all those (balancing chemical reactions) exercises now\" that I will cherish for some time. I was really grateful to see students' efforts rewarded in even this small way.\r\n\r\nAs we wrap up the school year, I'll be reflecting on these lab experiences and looking forward to innovative new ways to bring similar such experiences for students next year, armed with new ideas and lessons learned. I was teaching a subject I wasn't familiar with, learning content late at night, and frantically designing lessons that were very much hit-or-miss with my students. It was exhausting and I knew my lessons weren't living up to what my students deserved. But thanks to this curriculum, the situation has changed. Now, I have a full year's worth of engaging, thoughtful lessons and activities all ready to use. That means I can spend my energy where it's really needed: working closely with students, answering their questions, and helping them build science skills.\r\n\r\nMy students love this curriculum, and through the real-life case studies and the activities they feel like true forensic investigators in our class. Our classroom has come alive with hands-on labs and investigations. My students loved practicing lifting and analyzing fingerprints, and getting to know the intricacies and uniqueness of their own prints. My students were also (almost too) excited about burning fiber samples, and are counting down the days until the blood spatter activity next week. It has been amazing to watch students who weren't as connected earlier in the year light up with curiosity and enthusiasm. I don't think they even realize how different things are from before but their engagement speaks volumes.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make this possible. The centerpieces of the Hands-on Learning in Physics project were the Wimshurst machine and the van de Graaff generator (both pictured!), which are classic static electricity demonstrations. Upon watching and hearing and seeing the static discharging from the generators, students pretty predictably self-sorted along the lines between pure fascination and (shall we say) extreme caution. The two camps (universal across either set of classrooms and grades) either crowded around for their chance to make the static sparks fly or kept their distance to watch. Just prior to the demonstrations, we described the triboelectric series (the tendency of materials to gain or lose electrons), and students got to immediately watch (and in at least one instance, feel) it in action. \r\n\r\nIn another lesson, students used the neodymium magnet to build a solenoid motor (pictured!) using a battery and magnet wire. It was a multistep lab that challenged students to follow instructions carefully and make minute adjustments (while thinking about errors and causes and effects), and it rewarded them with a cool spinning motor.\r\n\r\nThese equipment have filled in an essential piece of our science classroom, providing an opportunity to give visual demonstration of concepts we've learned and served as a driver of a lot of interesting questions and tangents which is itself an important part of science learning alongside the experimental process discussion it drove. Physics students (12th grade) will use the generators in the Spring semester, while the lenses and mirrors will be used in the unit immediately following, which in addition to learning about optics and making ray diagrams will also provide many students important practice graphing and problem solving. The self-contained (9th grade) classroom will also use the optics equipment to make images and measurements. I am grateful for the assistance as we pursue not only the learning of interesting (and even occasionally useful!) science phenomena but also the practicing of essential scientific and mathematical skills of measuring, analyzing, and interpreting data that make up the foundation of our classroom. Students got their first exposure to other new equipment like the photogate from Vernier, seeing in real time the measurements and graph data of the claims they were testing. We had entertaining Q&As about the lasers used by the Vernier photogates and speculated on how me might use the photogates in the hallways of Penn Treaty for good (and maybe for evil).\r\n\r\nThis was a pivotal laboratory exercise for me as a teacher, as I took the opportunity to learn a new photogate interface and system from that of my previous school. It took me assembling this discovery lab for students to do a little bit of my own exploration to familiarize myself with the hardware and software, and I was excited to take what I observed and compared to write (and rewrite) engaging Physics lab work for students to take their discovery into their own hands (with the help of their own burgeoning scientific judgment and intuition). \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your continued support for our students and their science education.
