I apologize profusely that I never put my thank you up. I received these books a few years ago, and I still use it every year during my enrichment block.\r\n\r\nThis is one of the most impactful books that I use with my students each and every year! The students are able to connect to the book \"Refugee\" because of the current state of the world that we live in. The students enjoy tracing the story lines and the best part is when they realize the connection between ALL the characters at the end of the novel. \r\n\r\nEach year, I use this book to build my students' vocabulary. The vocabulary that we use helps them to connect to the current affairs that are happening in our world right now. I also use the book to discuss different periods of time where there was big movement of people trying to flee their countries due to it being unsafe. \r\n\r\nMany of the students in my classroom have fled their country for one reason or another. The vocabulary that we are using helps them to talk about and build on their own experience. It helps them to express what they may have been through or the feelings that they are having to leave. The book also helps the students who had to leave their country realize that they are not alone and sadly, it has been happening for years! \r\n\r\nThe best year that I had with the book \"Refugee\" was the year that I first got it. We read the book whole group, in all of my class periods. In the book we follow the story of Josef, who was living during the time of World War II. One of my students was Jewish, and was able to connect us to a Holocaust survivor through her community center she belonged to. In the pictures I posted, you can see the video call that we were able to do with someone what was facing the same trials and tribulations that Josef was going through. This had a huge impact on the students because it made the book \"Refugee\" more real to them. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do this again, though I wish I could. \r\n\r\nI look forward to continue to read the novel \"Refugee\" with my classes each and every year. It is always my favorite, and the students', time when we get to delve into the book. Being able to have a book that connects to the students and is of high interest is always a huge win in the educational world. Thank you for allowing me to have this class set with your generous donations! \r\n\r\nAs always, thank you for supporting my classroom and the students sitting in front of me!","fullyFundedDate":1656073085296,"projectUrl":"project/building-empathy-through-literature/6248496/","projectTitle":"Building Empathy Through Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Woynar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1934301_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1539894850286","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jenna-woynar"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_91556","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":630,"numTeachers":53,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":39,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":56.0,"schoolId":91556,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lyman B Goff Middle School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Lyman B Goff Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/rhode-island/pawtucket-city-school-district/goff-junior-high-school/91556"}
