Some pulled out the socks and jumped for joy! I was also able to get some books for them. I was sneaky about finding out their favorite books to read and purchasing those exact books. I have never seen students SO excited about opening a gift. They loved it! I also used a bit of my own money and time to make some handmade quilts to send home with the socks, books, and snacks. The mirrors have helped my students understand how sounds are formed in their mouths and also use them to see if the letter sound they are saying is a vowel or a consonant (consonants are sounds that close the mouth and are blocked by the tongue teeth or lips. Vowels open the mouth and are voiced).\r\n The little colored chips have been beneficial when it comes to sounding out words and using them for orthographic mapping for spelling. They also are useful for phonemic awareness activities such as deleting initial, medial, or final sounds. Even though those activities are auditory, the chips help them visualize where in the word the sound is going away so they can produce the new word. (e.g.., say tiger, now say tiger without the /g/. the new word is tire). \r\nThe hand2mind Advancing Phonics Word Work Small Group Set has helped them with word building activities. They really love this hands on activity and leaves out the frustration of always having to write out the words. They can build them. We often play games where I have them find the sounds to build a word and then have them replace a letter to make a new word. One of the fourth grade classes chose A Rover's Story to read together while the other chose Felice and the Wailing Woman. Both classes were able to engage in shared reading of their chosen books. Lots of critical thinking and questioning took place during these readings. The students were able to make connections to other stories that they had heard or read previously. We also took notes and drew in the book as images, questions, and thoughts came up. Because their homeroom teachers were involved, the students were also able to read and engage outside of the library. The fact that each student will be keeping their book to enjoy over and over again added to their excitement.\r\n\r\nAs a bonus, the students were able to receive a different book to read over the some. This was a total surprise to both classes. One of the classes were surprised to receive The Lost Library and the other received The Cursed Moon. I know that the students will be able to apply some of the techniques we used to read the book, which will help prevent some of the summer slide that so many students experience.
