In the past, my classroom library was limited in nonfiction options, which made it difficult to support students who preferred reading about real people, events, and issues. With Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, students explored themes such as grief, guilt, and the pressures societal and cultural expectations in a way that truly resonated with them. In class, we listened to the audiobood, narrated by the author himself, while following along with the hard copy in hand. This method supports my struggling readers, English Language Learners, and students with learning differences. We paused often to unpack powerful lines, reflect on the emotions behind character decisions, and analyze the author's literary choices (this was the best part!). Students could easily flip back through the text to reference scenes and support their answers with evidence in both discussion and writing.\r\n\r\nWhat was most inspiring, was how the accessibility and relevance of the text allowed many of my students, mainly those who typically need many academic supports, to thrive. These students took ownership of it their novel study! I watched them step into leadership roles in classroom discussions, confidently guiding conversations and offering interpretations that truly reflected deep and authentic insight. Long Way Down gave them a voice, and they used it. The emotional weight of Will's story (his grief, the tension in each elevator stop, and the appearance of every ghost) had nearly every student fully engaged. It was a rare and beautiful thing to see an entire room reacting together, fully immersed in a book.\r\n\r\nFeaturing a relatively young, successful Black male poet like Jason Reynolds in our classroom made an incredible impact. His characters, particularly Will, gave students a mirror to see themselves and a window into the lives of others. Many students made strong personal connections to the themes and shared powerful reflections about how these issues appear in their own lives. This novel didn't just help us practice literary analysis, it sparked meaningful conversations about identity, choices, and healing. As we closed out our school year, Long Way Down gave us not only an engaging academic experience, but also an emotional and memorable one.
