A pre-reading activity we do has students carrying around a 5-gallon water jug through the school. The jug weighs about 40 lbs. They come back from their 7-10 min. walk with a new appreciation for young girls like Nya who carry water for hours each day. \r\n\r\nWe do a gallery walk where students learn about the Dinka tribe of Sudan. This teaches students about the traditions of the Sudanese people, which are extremely different from their own lives. When they do the gallery walk, I also ask students to emphasize some similarities between my students and the Dinka. There are significant similarities, such as the Dinka living in family units, having friends, and boys going to school. As we read, I want them to relate to Salva's feelings for his lost family and his love for his friends. \r\n\r\nThe last chapter of \"A Long Walk to Water\" is powerful. I want students to understand that love and service are more powerful than hate and war. Love and service change people's hearts for the better in many, many instances. This is the kind of power I want them to have in each other's lives. They have great capacity to do good in the world. I emphasize that with the end of this book, as I want them to provide good change in the world.","fullyFundedDate":1771966649817,"projectUrl":"project/water-water-underground-and-not-a-drop/10103930/","projectTitle":"Water, Water Underground, and Not a Drop to Drink","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Leak","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10437883"},{"teacherId":9701895,"projectId":9137934,"letterContent":"My classes received the Jolly Rancher bags! It's so nice to have so I can reinforce positive behaviors. Especially at the start of the year! I have already been passing out Jolly Ranchers to students who are displaying the behaviors I want others to emulate. I recently had one of my rowdy classes get on task because I started handing out Jolly Ranchers to students who were writing in their daily planners. The whole class fell into suit and it was so nice! I didn't have to call out bad behaviors because I was able to reward the correct behaviors!\r\n\r\nThank you so much, donors!
