From the moment the mindfulness materials arrived, my students were incredibly excited—there were smiles, curiosity, and lots of \"Can we try this now?!\" We introduced the tools during our morning meeting, and one of the most powerful moments was watching students use breathing tools and calming items to reset after a challenging situation. Students who often struggle with big emotions began to independently choose strategies to help themselves regulate, which has been truly impactful.\r\n\r\nWe now use these resources daily—whether it's starting our morning with guided breathing, taking short mindful breaks during transitions, or using calming tools in our designated calm-down space. These materials have helped students build self-awareness and emotional regulation skills, which has led to fewer disruptions and more time focused on learning. I've noticed students are more patient with one another, better able to communicate their feelings, and more confident in managing stress.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are continuing to build on these skills by integrating mindfulness into our daily routines and connecting it to goal-setting and reflection. Students are learning how to recognize their emotions, choose strategies that work for them, and reflect on how mindfulness supports both their learning and relationships. Your support has made a lasting impact—not just on academic success, but on the overall well-being of my students. Thank you for helping create a calm, caring classroom environment where every student can thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1769178060836,"projectUrl":"project/creating-calm-mindfulness-materials-for/9883436/","projectTitle":"Creating Calm: Mindfulness Materials for a Title I 5th Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hazen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9560979_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1720476633584","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9560979"},{"teacherId":9560979,"projectId":9992990,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students were able to engage in a meaningful and culturally rich exploration of Lunar New Year through hands-on art and inquiry. When the materials first arrived, there was an immediate buzz of excitement in the room—students were eager to open everything and couldn't wait to get started. Many of my students had never experienced Lunar New Year traditions before, so this project became a powerful opportunity to build both cultural awareness and curiosity. One of our favorite moments was creating traditional-inspired art pieces and learning the symbolism behind colors, animals, and decorations. Students were especially engaged as they connected the zodiac animals to their own birth years and shared their learning with classmates.\r\n\r\nThese resources allowed me to create an immersive learning experience that integrated science, social studies, and art. Students explored how traditions are shaped by culture and environment, while also practicing observation, creativity, and critical thinking. Because many of my students are English learners, the visual and hands-on components made the content accessible and engaging for everyone. I saw students collaborating, asking thoughtful questions, and taking pride in their work in a way that goes beyond a typical lesson.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we are building on this experience by connecting our learning to broader themes of cultural traditions and global celebrations. Students will continue to compare how different cultures celebrate the new year and reflect on the importance of traditions in their own lives. This project has not only deepened their understanding of Lunar New Year but has also helped foster a more inclusive and curious classroom community. With the supplies you provided, my students have been able to engage in hands-on investigations, ask questions, and discover answers through real experiences. Whether they are modeling how matter moves, exploring ecosystems, or testing solutions to real-world problems, these materials have allowed learning to become active, exciting, and deeply meaningful.\r\n\r\nMany of my students are English learners or thrive with hands-on, visual learning opportunities. These supplies have helped break down language barriers and given every student access to rigorous science content. I've seen students who are typically quiet light up with confidence as they participate, collaborate, and share their thinking.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful impacts has been student engagement. My students are more curious, more willing to take risks, and more invested in their learning. They are asking deeper questions, making connections, and truly beginning to see themselves as capable scientists.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my classroom is a space where all students feel included, supported, and inspired to learn. We opened the boxes together, and you could feel the energy in the room shift as students began exploring the circuits, magnets, measurement tools, and engineering kits. The very next day, we used these supplies to launch a hands-on investigation about energy transfer. Students worked in teams to design small structures and test how different materials affected speed and motion. Watching them problem-solve, debate their ideas, and support one another showed just how powerful hands-on learning can be, especially for our Title I community, where these kinds of resources are often out of reach.\r\n\r\nYour generosity didn't just provide my students with materials—you gave them confidence, curiosity, and a genuine sense of belonging in science. Many students who are usually hesitant to participate were the first to dive into building, testing, and redesigning their projects. This momentum has carried into our upcoming unit on matter and engineering design, where students will use these STEM supplies to plan and test their own investigations.
