We were able to learn about her work through the lens of Mexico's history, Frida's personal life, and the artwork of other Spanish speaking artists. We began our unit studying art vocabulary terms in Spanish and we made observations about popular artwork from all over the world. When we started to delve deeper into Frida's work more specifically, we used the resources that you helped to provide to do a scavenger hunt of artistic elements in some of her most famous pieces!\r\n\r\n\tDiving more into Frida's life and art created a lot of Frida fans - and some critics of the people in her life who challenged her! We read several mini-biographies of her life to practice interpretive reading skills. The students were able to practice their presentational speaking skills in the target language when they researched a famous work of hers and presented their findings to the class. We sprinkled a little bit of fun in, too, when we completed an art project that allowed the students to design their own \"autorretrato\" - self portrait!\r\n\r\n\tThe absolute cherry on top, as well as the reason I wanted to do this project, was the culminating field trip we were able to take. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was hosting the \"Frida: Beyond the Myth\" show. Taking my students there would have been a great experience no matter what, but taking students who had been given the chance to learn about her life and work ahead of time made it so much more meaningful. I hope to continue to do similar projects whenever another opportunity arises in our area.
