One of my greatest goals as an ELA teacher is to foster a classroom culture that values reading for pleasure. To support this endeavor, students are given the last 10 minutes of class each day to read whatever they would like. \r\n\r\nMany of my students speak more than one language, and this year I have a large number of students who speak Spanish at home. Several of them are new to the US, and currently speak very little English. Having books in their home language to choose from for independent reading- especially popular books their peers are often reading in English- provides these students with a sense of belonging in the classroom, as well as the opportunity to continue to grow their love and appreciation for reading.
