The moment they realized their buildings would actually light up, just like Ember's failing lights in the story made the connection meaningful.\r\n\r\nStudents who typically struggle with abstract energy concepts suddenly had concrete context: \"If my circuit doesn't work, my building goes dark like in Chapter 3!\" The planning phase sparked rich discussions about which businesses Ember needed most and why the greenhouse was literally keeping the city alive. Watching them troubleshoot circuits while debating whether Lina and Doon could fix the generator created powerful parallels between fictional and real-world problem-solving.\r\nEach student designed and built a detailed model using legos of a building from the underground city. \r\n\r\nStudents chose businesses critical to Ember's survival such as the Pipeworks Supply Shops, light bulb shops, Greenhouse Markets—and had to justify why their chosen business mattered to the city's struggling infrastructure. The models required three walls with an open front (for visibility), multiple windows, roofs, and most importantly, functioning circuits with LED lights that brought their buildings to life. We provided structured planning sheets that guided students through design sketches, materials lists, circuit planning, and creative details like shop counters, living quarters, and growing areas for the greenhouses.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generosity of our donors, this project transformed from an idea into a powerful learning experience that students will remember for years to come. The class set of City of Ember books meant every student could read along and stay engaged. Your support didn't just provide books; it created an opportunity for students to see themselves as engineers, architects, and problem-solvers. Watching students make connections and their own perseverance in troubleshooting circuits was truly magical. They learned that both literature and science require creativity, critical thinking, and resilience. This investment in our classroom has ignited a love of reading and STEM learning that extends far beyond this single project. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in our students and making transformative, hands-on learning possible.","fullyFundedDate":1757536393631,"projectUrl":"project/powering-ember-lego-engineering-meets-l/9451913/","projectTitle":"Powering Ember: Lego Engineering Meets Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ferris","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5419052_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1527565471055","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5419052"},{"teacherId":9841623,"projectId":8950929,"letterContent":"Your donations have transformed our school's Turn Around Center more than I could have hoped! Thanks to our new resources we have been able to create an environment that supports student regulation by providing the tools our kids need to help themselves. We are now also able to schedule much needed sensory breaks for students across every grade level.\r\n When the children saw our new materials in the sensory room, they were ecstatic! They wanted to try out each new item as they came, they also loved getting to watch the upgrades as they happened. I let two boys help me unpackage some of our new supplies and this helped them feel pride in this new environment that they get to be a part of.\r\n Our next steps for the Turn Around Center are to make it as self sufficient as possible. Students will sign in and out independently, access the supplies they need, and clean up by themselves when their timer goes off with a staff member supervising. This plan will help teach our kids the tools and techniques they can use to regulate and eventually teach them how to identify their needs so they can self-advocate for what they need.","fullyFundedDate":1734634243948,"projectUrl":"project/create-a-student-paradise-with-our-turn/8950929/","projectTitle":"Create a Student Paradise With Our Turn Around Center!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Maliyah","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9841623_orig.jpg?crop=2400,2400,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1732575076701","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9841623"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61329","usesÐǿմ«Ã½":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":437,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":21,"percentAsian":31,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":41,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":62.5,"schoolId":61329,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Endeavour Elementary School on @Ðǿմ«Ã½:","schoolName":"Endeavour Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/mukilteo-school-district/endeavour-elementary-school/61329"}
