A large, PVC pipe structure creates 9 squares. One student stands in each square. The student in the middle square serves (toss or hit) the ball into the air to another square. Students must hit the ball if it comes to their square. Missed hits or misplaced hits require that the students join the wait line and the remaining students rotate around the squares. The goal is to get to the center square, we call it the Hawk square (our mascot) and stay there as long as you can.\r\nThe students were so excited when they walked into the gym and saw the structure. The game directions were simple and they caught on quickly. We played for two weeks and they were disappointed when we needed to put the equipment away. I assured them that the game would come out quite often during the school year.\r\nWe received the activity pack that came along with the game. It had additional equipment that provided alternatives and modifications to the game. We tried out a poster that had an exercise for each square. Whichever square got out, the whole class would do that exercise \"9\" times before rotating. I wish that I could have captured the squeals that happened as I opened the box and showed them the new Snapbots, Snapdinos and cubes that they would be able to manipulate and play with. So many of my students come to me still working on fine motor skills. I purchased several Yoto story cards that accompany some well-loved books that are already in my classroom library. When the students listen to the stories, they grab the book so they can follow along. Their engagement during this independent station is unmatched. Every student in my class has had the opportunity to use the Yoto independently and with a partner.\r\n\r\nSome of the students who are reading at a higher level have benefitted from beginner chapter books, such as the Magic Tree House and Dragon Masters series. Some of the struggling readers are exposed to those titles as well, but have found a love of slowing down while reading picture books.\r\n\r\nThe Yotos have been such a fun new addition to the literacy piece of our classroom. Thanks to the donors, my students are falling in love with books and with reading more than ever before. Having the Tonie box has been something students look forward too. For some students, it has been something they get to share with other students as well. \r\n\r\nWhile I am still figuring out the best way for all students to get more time with the Tonie box, it has been something fun and exciting. It has been used on rotation for students to listen to one of the chapter audiobooks, novels, or informational Tonies during our silent reading time. Some students who are in with other teachers during this time, get to share it with their Kinder buddy during our time together on Wednesdays. It is very cool to see which Tonie students are choosing during this time. Often students will try to find the hard copy of the text if they can access it at school to read or continue reading the story. \r\n\r\nIn the PNW we often have Rainy Day Indoor Recess, and the Toniebox has been a huge tool for students as well. They can sit and listen to the stories or learn about some of the animals from our info Tonies. \r\n\r\nI am eager to continue to find ways to pull it into daily use, as well as offering it as incentives for students. What I love about it, is that it makes reading accessible no matter the student and their reading level.
